Luke Hirten is one of the greatest defensive players to ever don a Pace men's lacrosse uniform. He anchored the defense of arguably the best team in program history, the 1999 Setters, which took home the Northeast-10 Conference Regular Season and Tournament Championships. Hirten was said to have single-handedly shut down every top attacker from each team the Setters played against. The Setters went 14-1 in 1999, finished the season ranked No. 3 in the nation, and had been ranked No. 1 for a good portion of the season, the first time ever that a Pace team held the top spot in the country.

Hirten's defensive efforts did not go unnoticed, as he was named the Northeast-10 Conference Defenseman of the Year in both 1998 and 1999, also being selected to the NE10 All-Conference First Team in both seasons. He was also named a USILA Division II All-American in 1999. Hirten also helped Pace to a Knickerbocker Conference regular season championship in 1996.
