Baseball Splits Doubleheader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CARY, N.C. – The Setters split a doubleheader on Monday afternoon, defeating Felician 11-10 in the opener before falling 3-0 to Findlay in the second contest.

The Setters advance to 2-7, 0-0 NE-10 following Monday's slate.

In the first game of the day, Felician took advantage of some shaky defense by the Setters and scored four runs in the first, all of them unearned. Then, in the top of the second, following back-to-back walks, Michael Gulino hit into a fielder's choice but, thanks to a throwing error, Nick LoBello crossed the plate.

The biggest scoring output for Pace came in the third when they scored five runs to claim a 6-4 lead. After Frank Mayo was hit by a pitch, and advanced to second on a wild pitch, Tyler Bivona drilled a single to first base to plate Mayo. After another walk and hit by pitch, the Setters had the bases loaded with two outs. After a Felician passed ball, all runners advanced and Tom Midolo was able to score. Gulino drew a walk immediately after that was followed by a wild pitch, once again advancing all runners and scoring LoBello. Shortstop Brett Bittiger ended the crucial run when he singled to score a pair of Setters.

Each team tacked on one run between then and the sixth inning when Midolo blasted a solo homerun to left field to give Pace an 8-5 lead over Felician.

In the eighth inning the Setters continued to stay hot offensively. Mayo crossed the plate on a pass ball before Gulino roped a two RBI single to score LoBello and Modolo and give Pace an 11-6 lead. The Golden Eagles added four runs in the ninth, but it wasn't enough as the Setters were able to hang on and win 11-10.

Jonathan Chudy earned the victory after tossing seven innings while striking out three batters, allowing just one earned run. Michael Forgione picked up the save after recording the final two outs of the contest.

Midolo went 1-4 with a homerun, three runs scored and an RBI. Gulino went 2-4 at the dish with a pair of runs batted in while Bittiger went 1-5 with two RBIs.

In the second contest against Findlay, the Oilers jumped out a three run lead in the first two innings of play. The Setters went down in order in the next three innings of play until their biggest threat came in the seventh frame. LoBello and John Kukura opened the inning with back-to-back singles, but the next three batters for Pace all went down on strikes to end the inning.

Mike Sweeney got the start for the Setters and earned the loss after tossing 3.2 innings while striking out three batters and allowing three earned runs. Anthony Rocco entered in relief of Sweeney and tossed 3.1 innings while allowing no runs.

At the dish, Kukura and Bivona each went 2-4 with a pair of singles.

The Setters return to the diamond on Tuesday when they square off with Dowling College at 10:00 a.m.
