Box Score BROOKVILLE, NY- Denzel Primus-Devonish (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) (Riverdale, MD/St. John's College) led the Setters with 21 points and 11 assists as the Setters fell to the Pioneers 84-82 in their season opener at the LIU Post Tournament. Pace opens up at 0-1, while the Pioneers start the season at 1-0.
The Pioneers pulled ahead early in the game as they build a 14 points advantage mid through the opening half. The Setters trailed by 12 points with 7:42 left in the first half and rallied back in a big way over the next few minutes of play. Pace used a 26-8 run over as four and a half minutes stretch as they flipped a 12-point deficit into a six point lead. Primus-Devonish led the Setters with 10 points in the run, while Jaylen Mann (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) (Youngstown, OH/Liberty) netted a pair of triples in the rally. Kevin Berardini (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) (Lake Forest, IL/Lake Forest) got the run going with a trifecta at the 7:22 mark, while back-to-back Mann three-pointers pulled the Setters to within four at 40-36 with 4:13 to play.
Primus-Devonish went coast to coast off a steal for a two-point deficit, while Nick Jackson (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) (Brooklyn, NY/Boys and Girls) hit a lay-up to knot the score at 40. Primus-Devonish gave the Setters their first lead of the game with a triple, while Jackson capped the run at the 2:50 mark with a three-pointer for a 46-40 lead. Pace maintained their advantage and headed to the break with a 51-47 lead.
LIU Post rallied to start the second half as they briefly took a one point lead less than four minutes into the second half. Jamaal James (Brooklyn, NY/Brooklyn College Academy) put Pace back in front with a lay-up and the Setters stretched the lead to six points at 62-56 with 13:52 left in the game. The Pioneers answered as they pulled ahead by four points at 65-61 but the Setters rallied to tie the score at 69 with 9:39 to play on a Mann jumper.
LIU Post retook the lead and extended out to five points at 82-77 with 2:38 on the clock. Berardini put the Setters back to within two points in the final 1:45 as he hit a triple and connected on a lay-up with under a minute to play to slice it down to 84-82. The Setters missed a shot with 25 seconds left but the Pioneers missed their free throw. Pace had a turnover in the final seconds as the Pioneers held on for the win.
For Pace, Primus-Devonish added four steals to his double-double, while Mann also had a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards. James added 15 points and four rebounds, while Berardini tallied 15 points and four boards.
Pace wraps up play at the LIU Post Tournament as they face the Golden Lions of Dowling College on Sunday, November 10 at 12 pm on the campus of LIU Post in Brookville, NY.
