PACE FALLS SHORT IN BOTH GAMES OF DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST UMASS LOWELL

LOWELL, MA- Despite hanging on in both games, the Pace University baseball team was swept by  River Hawks of UMass Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader this afternoon, losing the first game 5-3, while falling in game two 5-4. The Setters now fall to 13-25 overall and 6-16 in the NE-10, while the River Hawks improve to 24-18 overall, and 11-11 in NE-10 play.

Pace started the action early in the game one of the doubleheader after JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) drove home the game's first run on a single through the left side. The River Hawks pushed a across a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game up at one.

Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT/Waterford) would help break the tie in the top of the third after hitting a one out double to right. Turnier advanced to third on the same play after an error by the right fielder. Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) would drive Turnier home in the next at bat after hitting a single to make the score 2-1.

Pace's lead would be extended in the top of the fifth inning after Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) drove home a run on a groundout to second base to bring the score to 3-1.

Unfortunately for the Setters the lead was short lived, as the River Hawks would bring home two runs to tie the game at three in the bottom of the fifth. The River Hawks used a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-3, and would solidify the win with a fifth run in the bottom of the eighth.

Mike Sciarretta (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (4-5) was the starter for the Setters in game one, going 5 and 2/3 innings giving up four runs on seven hits, a walk and two strikeouts.

Just as they did in game one, the Setters were able to take an early lead in game two. Turnier would steal second base after a one out walk, and he would score on a single by Torello to give the Setters a 1-0 lead.

The River Hawks tied the game up in the bottom half, and in bottom of the third would take a 2-1 lead. This lead would be extended to 4-1 in bottom of the fifth giving UMass Lowell some insurance.

The Setters would begin a comeback in the top of the sixth when Michael Rodriguez (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) led the inning off with a single through the left side. After Christopher Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) reached base on an error, a single by Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) would drive home Rodriguez from third. A two out double by Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) would then bring home Spatkowski to bring Pace's deficit down to one with a 4-3 score.

Pace eventually tied the game in the eighth inning when Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) drove home Dammann from second who was hit by a pitch earlier in the inning. The River Hawks would push across the eventual winning run in the bottom of the eighth.

Chris Camastro (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) was the starter in game two pitching six innings, giving up four runs on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Kyle Henriksen (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (0-2) was given the loss for the game despite a solid performance in relief, going two innings, giving up one run on three hits, and striking out three.

The Setters return to action on tomorrow when they travel to Garden City, NY for a NE-10 game against the Panthers of Adelphi University, set for a 1 pm start.
