Box Score 2 PACE FALLS SHORT IN BOTH
GAMES OF DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST UMASS LOWELL
LOWELL, MA- Despite hanging on in both games, the Pace
University baseball team was swept by River Hawks of UMass
Lowell in a Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader this afternoon,
losing the first game 5-3, while falling in game two 5-4. The
Setters now fall to 13-25 overall and 6-16 in the NE-10, while the
River Hawks improve to 24-18 overall, and 11-11 in NE-10 play.
Pace started the action early in the game one of the
doubleheader after JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill
Valley) drove home the game's first run on a single
through the left side. The River Hawks pushed a across a run in the
bottom half of the inning to tie the game up at one.
Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford, CT/Waterford) would
help break the tie in the top of the third after hitting a one out
double to right. Turnier advanced to third on the same play after
an error by the right fielder. Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill,
NJ/Gloucester Catholic) would drive Turnier home in the
next at bat after hitting a single to make the score 2-1.
Pace's lead would be extended in the top of the fifth
inning after Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire)
drove home a run on a groundout to second base to bring the score
to 3-1.
Unfortunately for the Setters the lead was short lived, as the
River Hawks would bring home two runs to tie the game at three in
the bottom of the fifth. The River Hawks used a run in the bottom
of the sixth to take a 4-3, and would solidify the win with a fifth
run in the bottom of the eighth.
Mike Sciarretta (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (4-5)
was the starter for the Setters in game one, going 5 and 2/3
innings giving up four runs on seven hits, a walk and two
strikeouts.
Just as they did in game one, the Setters were able to take an
early lead in game two. Turnier would steal second base after a one
out walk, and he would score on a single by Torello to give the
Setters a 1-0 lead.
The River Hawks tied the game up in the bottom half, and in
bottom of the third would take a 2-1 lead. This lead would be
extended to 4-1 in bottom of the fifth giving UMass Lowell some
insurance.
The Setters would begin a comeback in the top of the sixth when
Michael Rodriguez (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton)
led the inning off with a single through the left side. After
Christopher Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) reached base on an error, a single by
Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) would drive
home Rodriguez from third. A two out double by Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington)
(Poughquag, NY/Arlington) would then bring home Spatkowski
to bring Pace's deficit down to one with a 4-3 score.
Pace eventually tied the game in the eighth inning when
Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley)
drove home Dammann from second who was hit by a pitch earlier in
the inning. The River Hawks would push across the eventual winning
run in the bottom of the eighth.
Chris Camastro (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington)
was the starter in game two pitching six innings, giving up four
runs on eight hits, three walks and three strikeouts. Kyle Henriksen (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (0-2) was given the
loss for the game despite a solid performance in relief, going two
innings, giving up one run on three hits, and striking out
three.
The Setters return to action on tomorrow when they travel to
Garden City, NY for a NE-10 game against the Panthers of Adelphi
University, set for a 1 pm start.
