DOUBLEHEADER WITH GREYHOUNDS
WORCESTER, MA- The Pace University baseball team split a
Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader with the Greyhounds of
Assumption College this afternoon. Despite Pace's
Laurence Flammia (Massapeaqua Park, NY/St. Anthony's) (Massapequa Park, NY/St.
Anthony's), and Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) (Middle Island,
NY/Longwood) getting three hits apiece, the Setters fell
in game one by a 10-8 score. Pace bounced back to split the
doubleheader by winning game two 13-6.
The Setters are now 9-21 overall and 4-13 in the Northeast-10
Conference this season, while the Greyhounds are now 18-13 overall
and 6-6 in conference play.
The bats we on fire early for the Setters as Wright would blast
a two-run home run to right in the top of the second. Kyle
Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) would use a single to
drive home a third run for the Setters in the second for the early
3-0 lead.
Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) would add on an additional run in the third with
solo home run to right. Wright would end up scoring another run for
Pace on an error to make the score 5-0.
Despite being down by five, two runs in the bottom of the third,
and three runs in the Greyhounds' half of the fourth would
tie the game back up.
Pace would gain another lead in the fifth inning after Flammia
scored on a Steven Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) (Bohemia,
NY/Connetquot) single, and Wright scored on a
fielder's choice to give the Setters a two run 7-5 lead.
This lead would be short lived however, as Assumption would rise
up in the bottom of the fifth to take an 8-7 lead with a three-run
inning.
The Setters tied the game up at eight in the top of the sixth
after Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) scored
on a sacrifice fly ball by Wright. Hart led off the inning with a
double.
The Greyhounds would ultimately win the battle, by scoring a run
in both the seventh and eighth innings to come away with the
victory.
Reliever Chris Camastro (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) (Lagrangeville,
NY/Arlington) (0-4) was given the loss for the game, after
pitching 1 1/3 innings, giving up one run on one hit, with two
strikeouts.
Assumption would get the early advantage in game two after
pushing across two runs in the bottom of the first. Pace's
Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) would respond
in the top of the second with a two-run home run to tie the game at
two.
The Setters would end up taking the lead in the top of the third
with a six run rally that included a two-run home run from Dammann
(his second of the day) to give Pace an 8-2 lead.
After the Greyhounds made the score 8-3 with a run in their half
of the third, the game would be scoreless until Assumption's
three-run rally in the seventh to bring the score to 8-6. This is
as close as the Greyhounds would get as the Setters would start to
put the game out of reach with three runs in the eighth.
The inning would start with a walk for Christopher
Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern). After a single
by Turnier, both Spatkowski and Turnier would advance on a wild
pitch. Both runners would then score on a double by Charlie
Galasso (West Harrison, NY/Harrison). Galasso would come
home on a single by Dammann to make the score 11-6.
Pace would tag on two more runs in the ninth to seal the 13-6
victory.
Reliever Neil Pezzullo (Harwich, MA/Harwich) (Harwich, MA/Harwich)
(1-0) was given the win in game two after going 3 1/3 innings
giving up three earned runs on three hits, to go with three
strikeouts. Kyle Henriksen (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) (Bay Shore, NY/Bay
Shore) earned a save in game two after pitching a perfect
2 1/3 innings with two strikeouts. The save Henriksen's first
