GEM TO LEAD SETTERS TO FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
JUNIOR HURLER FANS NINE IN SEVEN INNINGS

Michael Sciarretta (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (Stamford, CT/Stamford) tossed
seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit, while striking out nine
as the Setters posted their first win over the season 1-0 over
Queens. The Setters improve to 1-6 overall, while the Knights fall
to 5-4 on the season.
Pace pushed across its lone run in the opening inning as
Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern)
ripped a one-out single up the middle. Spatkowski would steal
second and moved to third as Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire,
CT/Cheshire) reached base on a throwing error by the third
baseman. A fielder's choice groundout by Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood)
(Middle Island, NY/Longwood) would score Spatkowski from
third.
The pitchers then took over as Sciarretta (1-1) was lights-out
for Pace, allowing a single in the fifth inning for the lone Queens
hit of the game. Sciarretta tossed seven innings and recorded nine
strikeouts for the Setters. Michael Mastrogiovanni (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) (Glen
Rock, NY/Glen Rock) pitched 2/3 of an inning, while
Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) picked
up his first save of the season as he struck out three of the four
batters he faced in his 1 1/3 innings pitched.
For Queens, Brian Friedman was equally as good, tossing a
complete game eight innings, allowing one unearned run on three
hits, while striking out eight.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, March 10 when Pace
will play Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 3:30 pm.
