SETTERS EARN SPLIT AGAINST BENTLEY UNIVERSITY
WALTHAM, MA - The Pace University baseball team split a pair of
NE-10 Conference games in a doubleheader against the Falcons of
Bentley University. The Setters dropped the first game 8-0, and won
the second game by a score of 4-2 on Saturday afternoon at DeFelice
Field.
Pace will move to 16-22-1 on the season, and 10-12 in the NE-10
Conference. The split will put Bentley at 21-17 for the year, and
12-7 in conference play.
The first game of the day saw the Falcons take a quick lead in
the game as they jump on Pace starter Zach Dayton (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth)
(North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (1-3) early. Bentley
strung together five hits and three runs in the first two innings
off Dayton to take a 3-0 lead.
Bentley went on to extend their lead in the bottom of the fifth
inning as the Falcons scored three more runs on three hits to make
the score 7-0 after five.
This was also the inning where Dayton's day was finished as well
as he went four innings giving up six runs (four earned) on nine
hits. He walked four, and struck out three on the day.
The one highlight offensively for Pace in the game was
Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) as he had three of the eight Setter hits in the
game.
The second game of the doubleheader featured solid pitching and
timely hitting for Pace to help salvage a split for the day.
Pace got on the board first in the top of the third inning
scoring two runs to take a 2-0 lead. Steven Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot)
(Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) reached to start off the inning
on a throwing error by the Bentley second basemen that got him all
the way to third base. JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill
Valley) followed with a walk to put runners on the corners
with no outs. Kyle Turnier (Waterford, CT/Waterford) (Waterford,
CT/Waterford) drove in the first Pace run of the day with
a RBI single to left field. With runners on first and second base
Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) loaded the
bases with a single to left field. The bases were still loaded with
one out now in the inning, and Joe Cotone (Yorktown Hts., NY/Lakeland) Yorktown Heights,
NY/Lakeland) drew a RBI walk to make the score 2-0 in
favor of Pace.
The Setters added two more runs to their lead to make it 4-0 in
the top of the sixth inning. Pace got their runs on a sacrifice fly
by Conrad, and an RBI single by Liscinsky.
This would be all Pace starting pitcher Giuseppe
Granitto (Bronx, NY/Concordia) (1-5)
would need as he put in a brilliant performance to get his first
win in a Pace uniform. Granitto went eight innings giving up two
runs on four hits. He struck out three, and walked two in the
winning effort.
Pace will be back in action tomorrow as they come home to host
this same Falcon ball club. The game is scheduled to start at 1:00
p.m.
