SETTERS TO 3-2 COMEBACK WIN OVER SAINT
ANSELM COLLEGE
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace University
baseball team had a solid bounce back win on Sunday afternoon in a
3-2 come from behind victory over the Hawks of Saint Anselm
College. The Setters are now 5-1-1 at Finnerty Field this season.
The win improves the Setters to 6-11-1 for the season, and 1-2
in the Northeast-10 Conference. The loss will drop the Hawks to
5-10 on the year, and 2-1 in conference play.
The first six innings of this contest were dominated by solid
pitching as both teams found hits hard to come by.
Saint Anselm finally broke the scoreless tie in the top of the
seventh getting to starting pitcher Mike Sciaretta
(Stamford, CT/Stamford) for two unearned runs. The Hawks
only mounted two hits in the inning but it was the Setter defense
that let Sciaretta down. Pace made three errors in the inning which
led to the two unearned runs. The inning could have been a lot
worse had it not been for the brilliant relay of right fielder
Richard Sullivan (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk), and first
baseman Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic). The two teamed up to throw out a runner at the
plate to end the inning.
Sciaretta went seven innings giving up seven hits, and two
unearned runs. He walked two, while striking out seven in his first
start of the season.
The Setters were still down by two, with the score being 2-0,
heading into the ninth. Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire,
CT/Cheshire) led off the bottom of the ninth with a
single. Joe Cotone (Yorktown Hts., NY/Lakeland) (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland)
followed Torello with another single to put runners on first and
second with no outs. Dammann came up next, and placed a perfect
bunt down the left field line for an infield single to load the
bases for Pace with no outs. The Setters then caught a break as the
Saint Anselm starting pitcher John Healy (0-2) made a throwing
error on a pick-off attempt. A run scored on the play making it
2-1, and the situation was that runners were on second and third
with no outs. After Sullivan was intentionally walked to re-load
the bases Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) (Middle Island,
NY/Longwood) hit a sacrifice fly to tie the score at 2-2.
The Setters now had the bases loaded again with one out after a
Denis Alimonti (Jefferson Valley, NY/Lakeland) (Jefferson Valley, NY/Lakeland) intentional walk.
Freshman Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) then
came up to bat for Pace with the game on the line. Hart worked the
count to 3-2 until he got his pitch. Hart hammered a ball over the
centerfielders head to knock in Pace's third run of the game, and
give the Setters a 3-2 walk-off win.
Freshman Michael Tamburino (Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (Baldwin, NY/Holy
Trinity) (1-0) got the win pitching a perfect top of the
ninth for Pace.
Pace will be back in action on Tuesday, March 24 as they travel
to Springfield, MA to play American International College. The game
is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
