Box Score SETTERS RALLY WITH 11 RUNS
IN THE SEVENTH IN 11-6 WIN OVER MOLLOY
PACE ENDS FLORIDA SPRING BREAK TRIP WITH A KEY VICTORY
MIAMI GARDENS, FL- Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff,
NY/North Shore) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, while
Joe Cotone (Yorktown Hts., NY/Lakeland) (Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland) had a
key two-run triple in the seventh as the Setters rallied back with
an 11-run seventh frame to post a victory to close out their
Florida road trip. Pace improves to 5-9-1 overall, while the Lions
drop to 8-6 on the season.
Molloy struck first, scoring four runs in the third and added
two more in the fifth inning for a 6-0 lead. The Setters exploded
in the seventh, rallying for 11 runs in the inning to pull ahead
11-6. The inning started off inauspiciously for Pace as the first
two batters were retired on groundouts. Chaputian kicked off the
rally with a single up the middle. From there, the Setters could
not be stopped as the next five batters either singled or drew a
walk, while Pace answered with four runs to make it 6-4. Cotone
would tie the game at six with a two-run triple. Two batters later
Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) would drive in Cotone with the seventh run of
the inning for a 7-6 lead, Pace's first lead of the game.
The Setters would go on to score four more runs for an
improbable two-out 11-run rally in the inning. Chaputian had two
singles in the inning, while adding a stolen base, drove in one run
and scored twice. When the dust settled, the Setters had sent 15
batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on eight hits, pulling ahead
11-6 . Pace would hold off a Molloy rally in the seventh as the
Lions put two runners on base but failed to score. The
bullpen tandem of Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison,
NY/Harrison) and Michael Sciarretta (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (Stamford,
CT/Stamford) shut the door in the eighth and ninth innings
respectively as the Setters closed out their Florida road trip with
an important regional victory.
On the mound, Michael Franza (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook,
NY/Lynbrook) (1-0) tossed 1 1/3 innings of scoreless and
hitless ball, earning the win in relief. Luongo (1 2/3 innings, one
hit) along with Sciaretta (one inning, 0 hits/runs) kept Molloy off
the board in the final two-plus innings for secure the win for the
Setters.
Pace returns to the Northeast Region for their Northeast-10
Conference opener when they Setters will host the Hawks of Saint
Anselm College on Saturday, March 21 for a noon doubleheader.
