Box Score SETTERS CLIP FALCONS, 5-2, ADVANCE IN
NE-10 TOURNAMENT
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The #4 seeded Pace University baseball team
defeated the 5th seeded Falcons of Bentley College, 5-2,
in the opening round of the Northeast-10 Conference Baseball
Tournament this afternoon at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville
Campus of Pace University. The Setters improve to 29-24 on the
season, while the Falcons fall to 21-29 overall. With the win, Pace
advances to the double elimination round of the NE-10 Conference
Tournament and will face off against the #1 seeded and NE-10
regular season champion Franklin Pierce College on Friday May
11th at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, MA. First pitch is
scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
Bentley struck first scoring a run in the opening inning. Senior
Tim Denehy (Norwood, MA) led off the inning with a single to center
field. Denehy advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and moved to
third on a wild pitch. Sophomore Kevin Vona (Belmont, MA) drove
home Denehy on an RBI single that fell in front of the left fielder
for the early 1-0 lead.
Down 1-0, the Setters took advantage of a pair of Falcon errors
to score four unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth. Joe
Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) led off the inning with a
single to left field and then stole second. He advanced to third on
a groundout and attempted to score on a hit by Andre
Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) to the third baseman,
whose wild throw failed to cut Barracato at home and helped
Liscinsky advance to second. Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/
Bristol Eastern) followed with a walk and both Liscinsky
and Arburr moved up a base on double steals. Pace added another two
runs on a hit by Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/Choate Rosemary
Hall) that was mishandled by the first basemen, allowing
Liscinsky and Arburr to score. After a wild pitch moved Mullen to
second, Chris Brown's (West Kingston, RI/South
Kingston) RBI double to left center brought home Mullen,
giving Pace a 4-1 lead.
The Falcons cut their deficit to 4-2, scoring a run in the top
of the seventh, but that's as close as the visitors would get.
Steve Gath (Reading, MA) led off the inning reaching base on a
throwing error by the third basemen. Tom Haugh (Andover, MA)
followed with a double to left center, putting runners on second
and third. Charlie Pagliarulo's (Medford, MA) RBI groundout to
second brought home Gath. The Setters added their last run of the
game in the bottom of the seventh, as Barracato scored his second
run of the afternoon on a wild pitch. Barracato and Liscinsky each
finished the day with a pair of hits for Pace. Barracato also had a
pair of steals, giving him 25 for the year.
Sophomore Zach Dayton (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (North Falmouth,
MA/Falmouth) (4-2) picked up the victory going 6.1 innings
allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits, while walking one and
striking out five. Junior Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (Vestal,
NY/Vestal) tossed 1.2 innings of relief surrendering a
lone hit, while sophomore Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) (Norwalk,
CT/Norwalk) came in the ninth, picking up his eighth save
of the season, giving up one hit and striking out one.
Brian Fioretti (Huntington, NY) (5-8) went seven innings,
allowing five runs (one earned) on six hits, to go along with a
walk and five strikeouts in the loss.
