Box Score 2 BASEBALL SPLITS DOUBLEHEADER
WITH SOUTHERN NEW HAMPSHIRE
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace baseball team split a twin bill
with the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire, taking the opener 8-1,
while dropping the nightcap 3-0. The Setters remain at .500 at
14-14 and 7-2 in the NE-10, while the Penmen fall to 4-12 overall
and 4-5 in conference play.
Pace got on the board in the second as Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern)
(Bristol,
CT/Bristol
Eastern) and Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College)
(Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican
College) led off with back-to-back singles. Adam
Harwood (Los Angeles,
CA/Brentwood)
reached base on a throwing error by the third baseman to load the
bases. Chris Brown (West Kingston, RI/South
Kingston) ripped a single threw the left side to score
Arburr and Ross, moving Harwood to third and advancing to second on
the throw home. Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke)
(Westbury,
NY/Clarke) capped the inning with
a run scoring single to drive in Harwood.
The Penmen pushed across their lone run in the third as Rich
Russell and Ryan Thompson led off with back-to-back singles. Both
runners moved up a base on throwing error by the pitcher on a
pickoff attempt. Jeff Kirsh grounded out two short, allowing
Russell to score.
Pace tallied one run in the sixth and the seventh before putting
the game away in the eight, crossing the plate three times.
Barracato reached on a fielding error by the third baseman and
moved to second on a single by Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull)
(Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull). Liscinsky was
forced out at second on a fielder's choice by Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep)
(Bronx,
NY/Iona
Prep), with Barracato advancing o third and Cawley
eventually stealing second. Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall)
(Madison,
CT/ Choate Rosemary Hall) hit a
sacrifice fly to score Barracato. Arburr drew an intentional walk,
while Ross also walked to load the bases. Harwood came through with
a two-run single to score Arburr and Cawley.
On the hill, Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (Vestal, NY/Vestal)
starred, tossing seven plus innings, allowing one unearned run,
scattering nine hits and struck out six to pick up his fourth win
of the season. Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk)
(Norwalk,
CT/Norwalk)
closed out the final two innings, pitching shutout earning his
fourth save of the season.
The Penmen earned the split of the twin bill as starter Jon
Morse limited the Setters to four hits in his seven and one third
innings of work, while three relievers preserved the shutout, only
allowing one other hit the rest of the way. The Setters threatened
in the eight but Mullen struck out with the bases loaded.
For Pace, Doug Wenz (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull)
(Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull) started, going three
innings, allowing an unearned run and six hits, while fanning four
to pick up the loss. Mike Mastrogiovani (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen
Rock) threw a pair of shutout innings, while Aaron
Zrenda (Niantic,
CT/Loomis Chaffee Prep) pitched
two-thirds of an inning, giving up one run on one hit.
MacKenzie King (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren Regional) (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren
Regional) went the final two and one-third, allowing two
hits and one run, while striking out two.
The Setters return to action when they travel to non-conference
opponent Dowling College on Wednesday, April 4 for a 3:30 pm first
pitch.
