GREGORY NETS FIVE GOALS IN LOSS
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The #9 ranked Pace University
men's lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker to the Hawks of Saint
Anselm College in a Northeast-10 Conference match-up this afternoon
at Pace Field on the Pleasantville campus of Pace University. The
Setters end the regular season at 7-6 overall, 4-5 in the NE-10,
while the Hawks end at 6-7 overall, 4-5 in conference play. Each
team will continue to play, as both have qualified for the NE-10
Conference Men's Lacrosse Tournament. As the fifth seed, Saint
Anselm will travel to 4th seeded Merrimack College,
while 6th seeded Pace will travel to 3rd
seeded Saint Michael's College. Both games are scheduled for
Tuesday, May 2nd with 4:00 p.m. starts.
The Hawks jumped on the board first on an unassisted goal from
Chris Murphy (Winchester, MA) at the 7:07 mark of the first period.
Saint Anselm would add another goal from Matt Surette (Wakefield,
MA) (1:45) to take a 2-0 lead heading into the second quarter. Ryan
McDonald (Bow, NH) (12:44) and Steve Trocki (Braintree, MA) (11:53)
scored back-to-back goals to give the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
The Setters answered back scoring five straight goals to take a
5-4 lead. Pace's scoring surge was lead by senior Robert
Cornetta (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills West)
and Ryan Gregory (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage). Cornetta
scored the first two Setter goals to cut the deficit in half, while
Gregory netted three straight, all on extra man opportunities, to
take the lead. Cornetta was honored before the game as Pace's lone
senior on Senior Day.
Saint Anselm would retake the lead in the third as Trocki
(13:05) and Murphy (11:45) each tallied their second goals on the
afternoon. Freshman James Hammel (North Caldwell, NJ/West
Essex) (10:21) tied the game at six, before Paul Driscoll
(Milton, MA) (2:58) put the Hawks back on top to close out the
third.
The game continued to go back and forth as each team battled for
control. Matt O'Connell (Charlestown, MA) (12:17) opened the period
to put the Hawks up by two, but the Setters rallied back to tie the
game at eight on goals from Gregory (8:32) and Hammel (5:08). Saint
Anselm took a late lead on Mike Hooper's (Malden, MA) goal at the
1:17 mark, but Gregory's fifth goal of the afternoon with just 30
seconds remaining in the game would force overtime action.
After a scoreless first overtime, Brian Hubbert (Nashua, NH)
scored the game-winning goal with 2:12 left in the second OT.
Pace held the face-off advantage winning 13 out of 21.
Sophomore Timothy Matheis (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst,
NY/Lindenhurst) made 13 saves in net for the Setters,
while his counterpart, Andrew Roy (Westford, MA) made 14 saves.
