SETTERS TAME PANTHERS, 11-1

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball team defeated the Panthers of Adelphi University, 11-1 this afternoon in non-conference action at Finnerty Field on the Pleasantville Campus of Pace University. The Setters improve to 22-20 on the season, while the Panthers drop to 25-10 overall.

Junior Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) led the Pace attack going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with four RBI's and two runs scored.

The Setters drew first scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first.  Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) led off the inning with a single to right field and would advance to second on a steal. Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) (Westbury, NY/Clarke) followed with a single to right as well, advancing Cawley to third. Barracato would take second on a steal. He would finish with three steals on the day. Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/Choate Rosemary Hall) put Pace on the board with an RBI groundout to first that scored Cawley. Barracato would come around to score on an RBI single by Arburr down the right field line. Pace scored another run in the second as Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/ Walter Panas/Dominican College), who singled to lead off the inning, came home on a 463 double play.

Adelphi scored their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth on Joe Maranino's (Bronx, NY) infield single that scored Robert Calca (Elmont, NY), who bunt singled to reach base. Calca stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to be in position to score on the infield hit.

Leading 3-1, Pace tacked on another two runs in their half of the fifth as Barracato took advantage of a pair of throwing errors by the first baseman to score his second run of the game. The Panthers finished the game with five errors. Barracato would finish the afternoon with three runs scored. Ross's single to right brought Arburr home for the second run of the inning. The Setters would put the game out of reach as they scored three runs in the seventh and eighth innings for the 11-1 final.

In his first collegiate start, freshman Michael Mastrogiovani (Glen Rock, NJ/Glen Rock) (1-0) pitched a solid five innings, allowing one run on six hits to go along with a pair of strikeouts. Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (Vestal, NY/Vestal) and Michael Sheehy (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) each tossed a pair of innings in relief. Corbett gave up three hits and walk, while striking out two, while Sheehy allowed just one walk and struck out five.

Taking the loss of the visiting Panthers was Mike Bartlett (Massapequa, NY) (1-2) who lasted just 2 and a 1/3 innings, surrendering three runs on five hits, walking two and striking out one. Adelphi used six pitchers on the afternoon.

The Setters return to action on Thursday, April 26th, as Pace hosts Mercy College in a non-conference contest with first pitch scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
