Box Score LACROSSE HOLDS OFF BENTLEY 9-7
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace lacrosse team defeated the Falcons
of Bentley College, 9-7 in a Northeast-10 Conference thriller on
Pace's Pleasantville campus. The Setters improve to 7-4 overall and
4-4 in the NE-10, while the Falcons drop to 3-7 and 2-5 in
conference play.
The teams exchanged goals over the entire first half as Bentley got
things started at the 8:15 mark of the opening period, on a score
by Stephen Moulton. James Hammel (North Caldwell, NJ/West
Essex) knotted the score with a man-up tally with 5:43
left in the first period. The Falcons Andy Curtis and the Setters'
Robert Cornetta (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills
West) each scored to keep the game tied at two. Chris
Woods for Bentley scored with 3:17 left in the half, while Hammel
scored less than as minute later to once again tie the score,
taking the tie into the break.
Pace pitched a shutout in the third period, while taking the
lead in the process as Jake Sheppard (Brunswick East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/East Victoria)
(Brunswick East, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia/East
Victoria) gave the Setters the lead for good at the 7:49
mark, while Cornetta netted his second score of the day less than
two minutes later. Ryan Gregory (Bethpage, NY/Bethpage) (Bethpage,
NY/Bethpage) assisted on both goals.
The final period saw a flurry of scoring as each team scored
four goals. Hammel added to his four-goal afternoon netting two
more goals in the fourth period, while Gregory scored on a man-up
opportunity. Frank Argento (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence) (Lawrence, NY/Lawrence)
netted the Setters final goal with 2:37 left in the game for a
three-goal advantage. Bentley threatened, scoring with less than 10
seconds to go but could not get any closer, giving the Setters a
9-7 victory.
In net, Timothy Matheis (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) (Lindenhurst,
NY/Lindenhurst) played the entire game, recording 14
saves, while allowing 7 goals, earning his seventh win of the
season. For the Falcons, Andy Collette also went the distance,
tallying 12 saves, while allowing nine goals.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, April 25 when they
travel to Rockville Centre, NY to take on Molloy College in a
non-conference game starting at 4:00 pm.
