CAWLEY'S GAME 2 NINTH INNINGS DOUBLE LIFTS PACE TO TWIN
BILL SPLIT
RINDGE, NH- The Pace baseball split a doubleheader
with #15 ranked Franklin Pierce, dropping the opener 5-0, while
rallying in the nightcap, 2-1, as Jack Cawley's (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) double in the ninth
lifted the Setters past the Ravens.
Franklin Pierce took the opener 5-0 as
Ravens' hurler Kevin Renaud tossed a three-hiter over his 7 2/3
innings of work, while striking out 12. Renuad also went 3-for-4 at
the plate, scoring three of the Ravens' five runs. Clay Jenkins
closed out the final 1 1/3 innings without allowing a hit. Jack
Cawley, Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) and Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) accounted for the only Setters
hits in the opener.
Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) dropped his record to 4-4 on the
season, tossing seven innings, allowing six hits and four runs,
while striking out five. Doug Wenz (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) pitched the final inning, giving
up two hits and one unearned run.
Game 2 featured a pitcher's dual as the team
combined to use five pitchers to stymie the opposing team's
offenses. Franklin Pierce got on the board in the second to take an
early 1-0 lead.
The Setters chipped away in the fourth as Matt
Arburr singled with one out, stole second and moved to third on a
wild pitch. Aaron Zrenda (Niantic, CT/Loomis Chaffee Prep) tied the game with a run-scoring single to
drive in Arburr.
The score remained tied until the ninth, when the
Setters won the game with two outs. The first two Setters led off
the inning with a pair of strikeouts. Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) doubled to
right-center to get the rally started. Ray Caronia (Paramus, NJ/Paramus) was hti by a
pitch. Cawley won the game with a game-winning double to left to
score Liscinsky and give the Setters a split.
Nicholas Demeo started, went 3 1/3 innings
alllowing four hits and one run, while striking out two. Zach
Dayton tossed the final 5 2/3 innings of shutout ball, allowing two
hits, while fanning six, moving his record to 2-1 on the season.
The Setters returns to action when they travel to
Lowell, MA to take on Northeast-10 Conference opponent UMass-Lowell
on Friday, April 20 for a 4:00 pm first pitch.
