ARBURR AND MULLEN COMBINE FOR THREE HOMERUNS
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - In their Northeast-10
Conference opener, the Pace University baseball team defeated the
Owls of Southern Connecticut State University, 9-2, on Finnerty
Field on the Pleasantville Campus of Pace University. The Setters
improve to 7-12 on the season and 1-0 in the NE-10, while the Owls
fall to 4-15 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) and
Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall)
powered Pace as the due combined for three homeruns and five RBI's.
Arrburr was a perfect 4-for-4 in the game, including a pair of
homeruns, to along with three RBI's and four runs scored.
Angelo Fusaro (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (2-2) picked
up the victory, tossing six solid innings allowing two runs (one
earned) on four hits, while giving up a pair of walks and striking
out three.
Southern Connecticut got on the board first, scoring a run in
the top of the second. Nick Czekaj (Branford, CT) and Jim
McLaughlin (Medway, MA) singled and walked, respectively, to lead
off the inning. Both runners would then advance a base on a
throwing error by Fusaro as he failed to pick-off Czekaj at second.
Joe Kahlden (Norwalk, CT) followed with a sacrifice fly to left
field, scoring Czekaj. Fusaro would survive the inning surrendering
the lone run, as his defense backed him up with an inning ending
6-3 double play.
Pace answered right back as Arburr lead off the bottom of the
second with a solo homerun, his fifth of the season. The tie would
not last long as Michael Diaz (Monroe, CT) hit a solo homerun of
his own the following inning to put the Owls back on top.
The Setters took their first lead of the game putting three runs
on the board in the fourth. Following a Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx,
NY/Iona Prep) single to start the inning, Mullen hit his
second homerun on the year, giving Pace its first lead. The Setters
would go back-to-back as Arburr followed Mullen with his second
homerun of the game and sixth of the year.
Pace added to their lead the following inning as Arburr struck
again, this time with an RBI single that scored Adam
Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood), who was hit by a
pitch to start the inning. Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College) (Cortland Manor,
NY/Dominican College) followed with an RBI double to right
center, scoring Arburr. Chris Brown (West Kingston,
RI/South Kingston) continued the Setter rally with an RBI
double of his own, scoring Ross. Matt Rigoli (Parisppanny, NJ/Parisppanny) (Parisppany,
NJ/Parisppany), who reached base with a hit-by-pitch,
would later score on a passed ball. The Setters added their final
run of the game in the seventh, as Rigoli drove in Arbrurr with an
RBI single to left center.
Taking the loss for Southern Connecticut was Nick Carlucci
(Franklin, MA) (1-4), who surrendered seven runs on eight hits in
4.2 innings of work, while striking out four.
The Setters return to action on Thursday, March 29th,
as these two very same teams match-up again, this time in New
Haven, CT. First pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
