SETTERS SNAP SIX-GAME LOSING STREAK IN SECOND
GAME
POMONA, CA- The Setters dropped the first game of the
doubleheader against Cal Poly Pomona 6-1, while rallying in the
middle innings of the nightcap to split a twin bill, 7-4. The
Setters sit at 5-6 overall, snapping their six-game losing streak,
while the Broncos move to 9-15. In the opener, the Setters mustered
five hits, while committing four errors, while hammering out 10
hits and seven runs in Game 2 to pick up the split.
Pace struck early, as Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull) lead off the game with a single and later
stole second. With one out, Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx, NY/Iona
Prep) reached on an error by the shortstop, allowing
Liscinsky to score the Setters first and consequently only run of
the game.
After failing to score in the first two innings, the Broncos
scored one run in the third to tie the score at one apiece.
In the fifth, Cal Poly Pomona capitalized on two Setter errors,
both by 1B Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/Choate Rosemary
Hall) scoring twice in the inning, to take a 3-1 lead. The
Broncos added three runs in the sixth and pair in the seventh to
take a 6-1 lead.
The Setters threatened in the ninth, as Cawley reached on a bunt
single with two outs, while Mullen drew a walk. Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern)
(Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) struck out to end the game.
For Pace, Angelo Fusaro (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford, CT/Westhill)
went 5+ innings, allowing four hits and four runs, while striking
out one, dropping his record to 1-2 on the season. Michael
Sheehy (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) pitched two innings,
giving up four runs four hits, while Zach Dayton (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (North
Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) pitched a scoreless eighth inning.
In the second game, the Setters again got in the board early as
Mullen rocked a moon shot over the center field fence to put Pace
up 1-0 in the second. Cal Poly Pomona answered in their half of the
innings, crossing the plate three times, while racking up four
hits, including a pair of doubles.
Pace rallied in the third, as Liscinsky doubled with one out.
Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College) (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College)
singled, moving Liscinsky to third. Cawley drew a walk to load the
bases. Mullen put the Setters in the lead with a 3-run double to
deep center. The Setters were not done in the inning as Mullen
moved to third on a ground out and scored on a single by
Matt Rigoli (Parisppanny, NJ/Parisppanny) (Parsippany, NJ/Parsippany) to put
Pace up 5-3. The Broncos shaved the Setter advantage to one in
their half of the third, scoring a run on three consecutive
singles.
The Setters pitching held strong in the final innings, not
allowing the Broncos another run, while Pace tacked on some
insurance runs in the fourth and fifth inning to secure the split.
Mullen went 2-for-3 in Game 2 with two run scored and four RBI.
Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) and Ross
collected a pair of hits in the nightcap as well.
For Pace, Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) (Vestal, NY/Vestal)
moved to 2-0 on the season, tossing five innings, allowing 11 hits
and four earned runs, while striking out five. Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk)
(Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) wrapped up the final two innings,
earning his first save of the season, pitching a pair of shutout
and no-hit innings.
