Manchester, N.H. (April 10, 2006) - A pair of fourth-quarter
goals by Pace junior Robert Cornetta (Huntington Station, NY/Half Hollow Hills West) Huntington Station, NY/Half
Hills Hollow West) lifted the Setters to an 8-7 Northeast-10
Conference men's lacrosse victory over the host Saint Anselm Hawks
Monday afternoon at Melucci Field. The Setters improve to 3-5
overall and 3-4 in conference play, while the Hawks fall to 2-8
overall and 1-4 in the NE-10.
Joseph Infante (Sleepy Hollow, NY/Sleepy Hollow)
gave the Setters an early lead at the 10:24 mark of the first
quarter on a man-up goal, but the Hawks answered to take a 2-1 lead
after the first quarter on goals by Matthew Surette (Wakefield,
Mass.) and Brian Hubert (Nashua, N.H.).
The two teams traded goals in the second quarter, with Pace's
Ken Lysik (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) (Hopkinton, MA/Hopkinton) scoring first
at the 10:40 mark. Surette added his second goal of the game with
just over a minute remaining in the half to secure a 3-2 halftime
lead.
After Justin Page (Eagan, MN/Eagan) (Eagan, MN/Eagan) knotted the
game at three each with an unassisted goal 21 seconds into the
second half, the Hawks scored two in a row to take their biggest
lead of the game, 5-3. Hubert shoveled in an unassisted goal at the
10:35 mark, and then Steve Trocki (Braintree, Mass.) connected on a
pass from Chaz Breitstadt (Dublin, Ohio). Breitstadt finished the
game with two assists.
Pace scored four unanswered goals over the next eight minutes to
take a 7-5 lead. Lysik sparked the run with a goal at the 4:07
mark, which Cornetta followed with a man-up goal less than two
minutes later. Page scored an unassisted goal with 1:48 left to
play in the third before Cornetta capped the run with an unassisted
goal less than four minutes into the fourth quarter.
Breitstadt brought the Hawks within one at thr 11:07 mark when he
converted a Chris Murphy (Winchester, Mass.) pass, but Cornetta
scored what would be the game-winner less than two minutes later
off a pass from George Koutsoummbelis (Hicksville, NY/St. Anthony's) (Hicksville, NY/St.
Anthony's).
Saint Anselm sophomore Tim Rist (South Hadley, Mass.) brought the
Hawks within one at the 6:48 mark, but the Setters held on to win,
8-7.
Pace starting goaltender Timothy Matheis (Lindehurst, NY/Lindehurst) (Lindenhurst,
NY/Lindenhurst) made five saves in the first half of the
game, while Thomas Duca (Waltham, MA/Waltham) (Waltham, MA/Waltham)
stopped six shots in the second half. Saint Anselm starter Alex
Gostanian (Andover, Mass.) made 11 saves in just over 34 minutes of
action, while Andrew Roy (Westford, Mass.) stopped two shots over
the final 26 minutes.
The Setters return to action when they host Dowling on Thursday,
April 13th at Pace Field on the Pleasantville campus of
Pace University in a non-conference showdown set for 4:00 p.m.
