INDIANAPOLIS -- The Pace University baseball team heard their named called for the first time since 2013 on Selection Sunday as the Setters were tabbed with the No. 5 seed in the NCAA East Region after winning the Northeast-10 Conference tournament title for the first time on Saturday afternoon.
Pace (33-19) is set for a rematch against fourth-seeded Franklin Pierce in the first round of the regional. Coming out of the winners' bracket, the Setters went 1-1 against the Ravens (34-17) in the NE10 championship on Saturday, losing the first game 12-2; but winning the second 9-4 for the title.
The Setters and Ravens travel to Manchester, N.H. to the host site of the top seed in the region and fellow NE10 opponent, Southern New Hampshire (37-11). As the No. 1 seed, SNHU, who won the Northeast receives a bye in the first game. Southern New Hampshire also had the top seed in the Northeast Division for last week's NE10 Championships but was knocked out of championship weekend by a first-round upset by Bentley.
Game one against Franklin Pierce is slated for Thursday, May 18 at 11 a.m. ET. The winner of game one will play Friday, May 19 at 11 a.m. The loser will square off against host-school Southern New Hampshire Thursday at 2 p.m. in the first elimination game.
Pace has not played against Southern New Hampshire this season.
No. 2 seed Goldey-Beacom (34-18) is the host site of the other piece of the East Region bracket. Goldey-Beacom will host No. 7 seed Felician (25-30); while No. 3 seed Le Moyne (31-19) will play against No. 6 seed Queens (33-17).
Pace was one of 22 automatic qualifiers for the NCAA championship.
The championship provides for eight regional sites hosting three teams and eight regional sites hosting four teams, for a total of 16 regional sites. All regionals are double-elimination tournaments and will be played May 18-21. Regional winners will advance to the best-of-three super-regional competition May 26-27. Super Regional winners will advance to the double-elimination championship finals June 3-10 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina. The finals will be hosted by the University of Mount Olive and Cary.
It is the third time in Setter history that the Blue and Gold made the NCAA II tournament field. Pace's other NCAA championship field appearances were in 1985 under the direction of Fred Calaicone and 2013 under head coach
Hank Manning. Manning's 2023 squad boasts the best record since his 2013 team which finished 33-17. Manning's 2006 team went 34-17, the highest win-total for the program so far.
Pace had previously qualified for the Division III NCAA Tournament in 1977, 1978 and 1979.
