PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace University women's soccer junior
Shannon Selvaggio (Warwick, N.Y./Warwick Valley) has been named the NE10 Defensive Player of the Week following a pair of sterling performances to start the season.
Â
The Warwick, N.Y., native started and was a stout presence on the backline in both of Pace's games last week, while making significant offensive forays as well.
Â
In Thursday's season opener against Georgian Court, Selvaggio crossed a pinpoint pass from deep in the corner to
Allison Carr (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) which was headed into the net for the Setters' first score of the season.Â
Â
It was Selvaggio's first career assist.Â
Â
In the second half of that contest, the junior's defensive skills shined and helped to blank the Lions, allowing the Blue & Gold to tie the game late.
Â
Against Post University on Saturday night, the junior's elegant passes and timely deflections and takeaways yet again helped to blank an opponent in the second half.
Â
Then with the game tied 2-2 in the 66
th minute, Selvaggio found space inside the box and blasted a goal past the goalkeeper to give Pace the lead en route to a 4-2 win.Â
Â
It was Selvaggio's first career game-winner.
