No. 7/8 Pace Men’s Lacrosse Rolls to Victory in NE10 Opener at AIC

Box Score SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The No. 7/8 Pace University men's lacrosse team opened Northeast-10 Conference play on Monday, taking on American International College (AIC) in the Setters' first road contest of the season. Pace rolled to a 23-7 victory over the Yellow Jackets at Abdow Field, highlighted by a 9-0 first quarter. The Setters defeated AIC by the same 23-7 score in last year's matchup on March 29, 2016, at Pace Stadium.
 
FIRST QUARTER
- Boasting their new Top-10 national ranking, the Setters made sure to show they belonged in that spot by getting to work quickly in Monday's matchup at AIC.
- Junior Liam Brennan (Huntington Station, NY/Walt Whitman) had a hat trick by the 11:25 mark of the first frame, as the Setters quickly took a 4-0 lead.
- The Setters kept the heat on the Yellow Jackets, firing in the next five goals to close out the first period with a commanding 9-0 advantage.
 
SECOND QUARTER
- Pace made it 10-0 quickly in the second before AIC finally got on the board.
- The Setters then started a new run, netting six straight goals to go up, 16-1, with 3:43 left in the half.
- The Yellow Jackets got two back just 45 seconds apart from each other, but Pace managed one more with 21 seconds left to take a 17-3 edge into the locker room.
 
THIRD QUARTER
- Pace made it a 20-3 game in the first six minutes of the second half.
- AIC picked up the final goal of the third at the 6:41 mark, as the Setters transitioned into clock-killing mode to try and hang on for the win on the road.
 
FOURTH QUARTER
- AIC got another in the opening minutes of the fourth, starting a back-and-forth trend that resulted in an even three goals apiece for the NE10 foes.

Win: Robert Beshlian (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) (3-0)
Loss: Matt Sayegh (0-9)
 
Goalkeeper Notes
- Junior goalkeeper Robert Beshlian (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) made one save and allowed one goal in 22:31, but did enough to earn the victory.

SETTER STATS
- Brennan finished with a ridiculous 10 points on three goals and seven assists in the win. He also added two ground balls.
- Junior Joshua Kreitler (Shelton, CT/Shelton) scored a game-high four goals.
- Sophomores Bradley Paterson (Caldwell, NJ/Depaul Catholic) and Kevin Vogelsberg (Wantagh, NY/Holy Trinity Diocesan) each scored three times, while Paterson caused two turnovers.
- Seniors James Vitale (Port Jefferson Station, NY/St. John the Baptist) and Robert Maddia (East Northport, NY/John H. Glenn) each had two-point games with a goal and an assist apiece.
- Sophomore Steven Weindler (Shoreham, NY/Shoreham Wading River) won 10-of-14 faceoffs, dished out three assists and scooped up seven ground balls.
- Freshman Bryce Clark (Rumson, NJ/Rums Fair-Haven Regional) won 11-of-20 faceoffs and picked up five ground balls.
- Junior Zachary Bradley (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) grabbed four ground balls and caused a game-high three turnovers.
 
YELLOW JACKET LEADERS
- Jack McIntyre and Kevin Papineau each scored twice for AIC.
- Will Lewis grabbed seven ground balls and handed out an assist.

WHAT'S NEXT?
- The Setters welcome Saint Michael's College for Pace Stadium on Saturday, March 18, for a 1 p.m. NE10 contest.
- Saturday will also be Youth Day at Pace Stadium, and all children in attendance will receive a Pace Men's Lacrosse schedule poster.
