RODRIGUEZ'S TWO-RUN BLAST LIFTS SETTERS TO SEASON OPENING WIN OVER BLOOMFIELD

WEST HARRISON, N.Y.-  Michael Rodriguez (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) blasted a two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Setters to a 7-5 season opening win over Bloomfield College. The Setters open up at 1-0, while the Deacons fall to 0-4 on the season.                                                                

The Setters struck first in the opening inning as Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) led off with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Roemer would eventually score on a wild pitch for the first run of the game. Tyler Collins (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) (Stamford, CT/Trinity Catholic) reached base on a dropped pop-up by the second baseman, reaching second base. Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) singled through the right side to score Collins on a close play at the plate. Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) blasted a shot down the right field line that dropped in for a run scoring double as Pace led 3-0 after one inning.

The Deacons answered in the top of the second with three runs to tie the game. Bloomfield would take the lead scoring one run in the fourth and one in the fifth to lead 5-3 after five innings.

With one out in the sixth, Wright singled to right field and moved to second on a passed ball. Martineson, on his way for a big 4-for-4 day, doubled in Wright to cut the Deacons lead to 5-4. Following an out, Martineson moved to third on a wild pitch and scored as Steve Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) singled to left field to tie the game at five.

The scored stayed tied until the eighth inning as Martineson led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez put the Setters in the lead with a two-run homerun to left as Pace took a 7-5 lead.

In the ninth, Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) retired three of the four batters to pick up his first save of the season. Chris Camastro (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) (Lagrangeville, NY/Arlington) started, going the first three innings, allowing three runs on five hits. Michael Sciarretta (Stamford, CT/Stamford) (1-0) came on in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out seven in five innings of work.

The Setters and the Deacons will wrap up their two-game series on Sunday, February 27 when the teams will again play at Passidomo Park in West Harrison, NY. First pitch for Sunday's game is scheduled for 12 pm.
