PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Pace University Baseball flipped the game in the late innings, using a decisive eighth-inning surge to defeat Adelphi University, 8-4, on Wednesday afternoon at Peter X. Finnerty Field. The Setters stayed within striking distance early before delivering a six-run frame to take control, improving to 13-15 overall and 8-9 in the Northeast 10 Conference (NE10).
Adelphi struck first in the second inning and added another in the fifth to build a 2-0 lead. The Panthers extended the advantage to 3-0 in the sixth, putting the Setters in a three-run hole entering the final third of the game.
The Blue and Gold responded in the seventh, beginning the comeback effort. Justin Crispino delivered an RBI double to score Rocco Cimino before Brayden Sweppenhiser followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Pace seized momentum in the eighth inning with a game-changing rally. Cimino tied the game with an RBI single before Crispino followed with another run-scoring hit to give the Setters a 4-3 lead.
Anthony Depetro extended the lead with a two-run double, while Manny Carreras and Sweppenhiser each added RBI doubles to cap a six-run inning and push the advantage to 8-3.
Adelphi added a run in the ninth, but the Setters closed out the victory to secure the win.
Cimino and Crispino each recorded two hits and drove in runs at the top of the order, while Sweppenhiser added two RBIs. The Setters totaled 10 hits in the win, including four doubles during the decisive late rally.
The Setters continue NE10 play this Saturday at 12:00 p.m. with a road meeting against the Yellow Jackets of American International College.
