SETTERS SEVEN-RUN SECOND INNING KEY TO 10-5 WIN OVER RUTGERS NEWARK

FLEMINGTON, N.J.- The Setters exploded with a seven-run second inning as Pace defeated Rutgers-Newark 10-5 in non-conference action. The Setters improve to 2-6 overall and the Scarlet Raiders fall to 1-3 overall.

The Setters broke the game open in the second as Pace opened the inning with three straight singles to load the bases as Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) got the Setters' rally started. After a groundout forced Torello out at home, Mike Rodriguez (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) drew a walk to score the first run of the game and Martineson would later score on a wild pitch. Following a fielder's choice by Robert Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill), JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) ripped a two-run single up the middle to score Horn and Rodriguez. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern), Torello and Hart each had RBI single later in the inning to account for the rest of the Setters' run and a 7-0 lead.

The Scarlet Raiders rallied with four runs in the sixth but the Setters' answered with three runs in the seventh as Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) had a two-run double to score Spatkowski and Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore), who both drew walks.

Michael Franza (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started, tossing four scoreless innings, while striking out three.

The Setters return to action on Wednesday, March 10 when Pace will play Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 3:30 pm. at Diamond Nation in Flemington, NJ.
