Box Score SETTERS SEVEN-RUN SECOND
INNING KEY TO 10-5 WIN OVER RUTGERS NEWARK
FLEMINGTON, N.J.- The Setters exploded with a seven-run second
inning as Pace defeated Rutgers-Newark 10-5 in non-conference
action. The Setters improve to 2-6 overall and the Scarlet Raiders
fall to 1-3 overall.
The Setters broke the game open in the second as Pace opened the
inning with three straight singles to load the bases as
Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire), Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington)
(Poughquag, NY/Arlington) and Brandon Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley)
(Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) got the Setters' rally
started. After a groundout forced Torello out at home, Mike
Rodriguez (East Hampton, NY/East Hampton) drew a walk to
score the first run of the game and Martineson would later score on
a wild pitch. Following a fielder's choice by Robert
Horn (Stamford, CT/Westhill), JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg,
NJ/Wallkill Valley) ripped a two-run single up the middle
to score Horn and Rodriguez. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol,
CT/Bristol Eastern), Torello and Hart each had RBI single
later in the inning to account for the rest of the Setters'
run and a 7-0 lead.
The Scarlet Raiders rallied with four runs in the sixth but the
Setters' answered with three runs in the seventh as
Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) had a two-run double to score Spatkowski and
Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore), who
both drew walks.
Michael Franza (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) (Lynbrook, NY/Lynbrook) started,
tossing four scoreless innings, while striking out three.
The Setters return to action on Wednesday, March 10 when Pace
will play Saint Thomas Aquinas in a non-conference game at 3:30 pm.
