Box Score THREE-RUN SIXTH INNING GIVES
PACE ITS THIRD STRAIGHT WIN
FLEMINGTON, NJ- The Pace University baseball team used a
three-run rally in the sixth inning to beat out the Spartans of
Saint Thomas Aquinas College 3-1. The Setters improve their record
to 3-6 overall with their third straight win, while the Spartans
fall to 2-4 in their season.
The bats on both sides were silent until the bottom of the sixth
inning when Mike Torello (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire) (Cheshire, CT/Cheshire)
led the Setters off with a double.
Chris Roemer (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) (Ardsley, NY/Ardsley) hit a double
of his own to drive in the game's first run. Brandon
Martineson (Warwick, NY/Warwick Valley) would follow in
Roemer's footsteps with another double to make the score 2-0.
After Martineson advanced to third on a fly ball,
Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore)
would drive Martineson home after grounding out to the pitcher to
give Pace a 3-0 advantage.
In the seventh, the Spartans would respond by driving in their
first and only run, but the Setters would take home the victory
after Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison)
shut down the Spartans 1-2-3 in the ninth inning, striking out two,
to earn his second save of the season.
Richard Sullivan (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) started
the game for the Setters, pitching four innings while giving up
three hits, three walks, and striking out three.
Reliever Brian Sundberg (Westbury, NY/WT Clarke) (Westbury, NY/WT
Clarke) earned the win for the Setters going 2.1 innings
in relief giving up the Spartans' only run on three hits, two
walks, and striking out three. Sundberg is now 1-0 on the season.
The Setters return to action on Saturday March, 13 when they
play in a doubleheader against Wilmington College in Wilmington, DE
starting at noon.
