PACE DEFEATS CALDWELL 7-2
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball team racked up
14 hits on their way to picking up a non-conference victory over
the Cougars of Caldwell College 7-2 on Wednesday afternoon at
Finnerty Field. The Setters are now 13-8-1 at Finnerty Field this
season.
The win will improve Pace to 19-26-1 for the season, and the
loss drops Caldwell to 16-22 for the year.
Pace got the scoring started in the bottom of the third inning
as Steven Sterlacci (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot) (Bohemia,
NY/Connetquot) got the Setters going with a one out single
up the middle. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) then hit a single to shortstop to put men on the
corners with two outs. Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull) drove in the first run of the game with an
RBI single through the left side to make the score 1-0 Pace.
Vinny Dammann (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) (Mullica Hill, NJ/Gloucester
Catholic) kept the big hits coming as he belted a two RBI
double into right field to extend the Pace lead to 3-0 after three
innings.
The Setters put up another crooked number on the Cougars in the
bottom of the fifth inning as Sterlacci led off the inning with a
single to left. JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg,
NJ/Wallkill Valley) then moved Sterlacci over to second
with a sacrifice bunt. Spatkowski followed with an RBI double down
the right field line to make the score 4-0 Pace. Spatkowski scored
the next Setters run all by himself as he stole third, and scored
the fifth Pace run on a wild pitch to make the score 5-0 after
five.
This was all the support Pace starter Michael Tamburino
(Baldwin, NY/Holy Trinity) (4-1) would need as he pitched
six outstanding innings give up only one run on four hits. He
struck out three, and walked three on the day.
Pace scored two more runs in the later innings on a Liscinsky
RBI single in the seventh, and a Conrad RBI single in the eighth to
help the Setters cruise to a 7-2 win.
Pace will be back in action tomorrow as they will host
non-conference rival Dowling University in a doubleheader. The
first game is scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m.
