IN EXTRA-INNING THRILLER OVER SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT 3-2
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Pace University
baseball team continued their solid play at home as they pulled off
a huge come from behind NE-10 conference win over the Owls of
Southern Connecticut State University on Thursday afternoon at
Finnerty Field. The Setters are now 6-3-1 at Finnerty Field this
season.
The win improves Pace to 10-15-1 overall, and 5-5 in NE-10 play.
The loss drops the Owls to 8-11 on the season, and 3-2 in
conference play.
Southern Connecticut got on the board first in the top of the
third inning playing small ball against Pace starter
Nicholas DeMeo (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East) (Farmingville, NY/Sachem East). The
Owls used a walk, a steal, and two sacrifices to push the first run
of the game across the plate to make the score 1-0 after three
innings.
Pace came back to tie the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the fifth
inning. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North
Shore) led off the inning with a single through the left
side. With Chaputain now on third base, with two outs in the
inning, second baseman JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg,
NJ/Wallkill Valley) came up to the plate. Conrad used his
speed to create an infield RBI single to put Pace on the board at
1-1, after five innings.
DeMeo got pulled during the top of the seventh inning as he
pitched a brilliant game going six and a third innings giving up
one run on five hits. DeMeo also struck out three, and walked five
in his outing.
The Setters eventually fell behind again in the game 2-1 heading
into the bottom of the ninth. Pace was not ready to go home quite
yet as they rallied on the strength of a Joe
Cotone Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland) single, and
a throwing error by the Southern Connecticut pitcher to tie the
score at 2-2.
Frank Luongo (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (West Harrison, NY/Harrison) (1-0)
sat the Owls down in order in the top of the 10th inning
which set the table for the Setters in the bottom half.
Conrad led off the bottom of the 10th with a single
to left field, Andre Liscinsky (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull) (Trumbull,
CT/Trumbull) then moved him over to second on a sacrifice
groundout. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) stepped up to the plate with a chance to be the
hero, and he didn't disappoint. Spatkowski hit a single up the
middle, and Conrad came around from second to score the winning run
to give Pace the comeback win 3-2.
Pace is back in action on Saturday, April 4 as they will host
Assumption College in a doubleheader. The first game is scheduled
