PACE GETS SWEPT IN DOUBLEHEADER BY THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAVEN

PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace University baseball team dropped two NE-10 conference games to the Chargers of New Haven University. The Setters dropped the first game 5-2, and dropped a slugfest in the nightcap 14-11 on Friday afternoon at Frank Vieira Field.

The losses will drop Pace to 13-20-1 for the season, and 7-10 in the NE-10 Conference. The two victories improve the Chargers to 12-12, and 8-8 in conference play.

New Haven showed good patience, and had timely hitting, against Pace starter Zach Dayton (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (North Falmouth, MA/Falmouth) (1-2) in the first game as the Chargers took a 2-0 lead after seven innings. Dayton went on to pitch six and two thirds innings giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits. Dayton also struck out four, and walked three on the day.

With New Haven now leading 5-0 going into the top of the ninth the Setters didn't go down without a fight. Joe Cotone (Yorktown Hts., NY/Lakeland) Yorktown Heights, NY/Lakeland) walked with one out, and advanced to second on a pass ball. Patrick Chaputian (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Both runners would advance to second and third on another pass ball by the Chargers catcher. Kenny Wright (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) (Middle Island, NY/Longwood) then fouled out down the right field line which was deep enough to drive in the first Pace run of the day to make it 5-1. The Setters then sent up pinch hitter Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) who delivered another clutch hit as he drilled an RBI single to right to make the score 5-2. Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) kept the inning going with a single to left field to bring the tying run to the plate in JJ Conrad (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley) (Hamburg, NJ/Wallkill Valley). This Setters comeback was not to be as Conrad flew out to center to end the game.

The second game of the doubleheader was an offensive slugfest that featured a combined 25 runs and 24 hits between the two teams. Unfortunately, the Setters figured on the wrong end of this shootout as Pace lost 14-11.

Pace starter Giuseppe Granitto (Bronx, NY/Concordia College) (Bronx, NY/Concordia) (0-5) struggled on the day as he let up eight runs (three earned) on seven hits in two innings of work. This resulted in the Setters falling behind in the game 10-2 after three innings.

Tyler Hart (Poughquag, NY/Arlington) did his best to get Pace back in the ballgame after hitting a three RBI triple in the eighth inning to bring the score to 14-11 after eight innings. Hart went 2-for-2 in the game with five RBI's and two runs scored. Pace didn't have enough outs to work with as they couldn't complete another huge comeback as they went on to lose 14-11.

Pace will have a few days off as they will be back in action on Monday, April 13 as they will host New Haven. The game is scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m.
