STUN #18 RANKED STONEHILL 75-71
SHIELDS, MCCOLLUM EACH POST DOUBLE-DOUBLE IN UPSET VICTORY
NORTH EASTON, MA- The Setters, ranked #10 in the latest NCAA
Division II Northeast Regional poll, stunned the #18 ranked
Stonehill College Skyhawks 75-71 in Northeast-10 Conference action.
Brittany Shields (Cold Spring,
NY/Haldane) and Shiesha McCollum (Newburgh, NY/Washingtonville) (Newburgh,
NY/Washingtonville) each posted a double-double in the
victory. The Setters picked up their fourth straight victory to
move their record to 16-8 overall and 13-7 in the NE-10. The
Skyhawks drop to 19-6 and 14-6 in conference play.
The Skyhawks controlled most of the first half, pulling ahead by
nine at 32-23 with 4:33 to go. The Setters would rally to cut into
the Stonehill lead and trailed the Skyhawks 37-33 at the break.
Stonehill would extend their lead to as much as six points at
41-35 in the first two minutes of play in the second half. The
Setters would rip off a 15-8 run capped off by a trifecta by
Kristen Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's)
to give Pace a 50-49 lead with just under 13 minutes to play in the
game. The two teams would go back and forth over the next 11
minutes.
The Setters took the lead for good down the stretch as Shields
hit a pair of free throws with 2:46 remaining in the game to put
Pace up 70-69. McCollum would extend the Pace lead to three points
just over a minute later with a lay-up. The Skyhawks' Kristen
McWhirter would cut the Setter lead back to one with a pair of free
throws with 34 seconds left in the game. The Setters would not be
denied as a Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St.
Peter's) lay-up with 30 left put the game on ice and Pace
would hold on for the upset win.
For Pace, Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor) (Windsor,
CT/Windsor) led the way with 20 points, while Welsome
finished with 10 points, three rebounds and five assists. Shields
recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 boards, while
McCollum also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds,
while swatting five shots. Laura Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island,
NY/St. John Villa) tallied five points, eight rebounds and
six assists.
Pace returns to action on Saturday, February 21 when the Setters
travel to Waltham, MA for a Northeast-10 Conference battle against
the Falcons of Bentley University. The game is scheduled to tip-off
at 1:30 pm.
