HUGGINS' 19 POINTS IMPROVES SETTERS' RECORD TO 9-1 AT
HOME
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- The Setters continued their dominance at
home, moving their record at the Goldstein Fitness Center to 9-1 as
they grounded the Owls of Southern Connecticut State University
62-49 in Northeast-10 Conference action. Brittany Huggins' (Windsor, CT/Windsor)
(Windsor, CT/Windsor) game-high 19 points improved the
Setters overall record to 12-6 and 9-5 in the NE-10, while the Owls
drop to 5-15 and 2-13 in conference play.
The Setters jumped out to a quick 12-3 lead seven minutes into
game as Brittany Shields (Cold Spring,
NY/Haldane) converted a pair of lay-ups and Huggins capped
the burst with a hoop. The Owls would battle back to trim the lead
to four points at 17-13 midway through the half on a Logan Lentz
triple. Shields would push the game back to eight with a pair of
baskets, before Southern Connecticut fought the game back to three
points with 2:47 left in the opening period. Huggins would hit a
pair of lay-ups in the final minute of play to give the Setters a
27-20 lead at the break.
Pace opened the second half on a 9-2 run as a lay-up and
trifecta by Kristin Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St.
Peter's) keyed the rally. A 6-0 Owls' rally got the game
back to eight points at 36-28 as Sarah Schicher hit a pair of free
throws and a bucket for four of the six points with 14:49 left in
the game. After the exchanging a pair of baskets over the next four
minutes of play, the Setters would put the away on ice as they used
a 13-6 run to see their advantage go from 38-30 to 51-36 with 6:18
remaining in the game. Pace would hold a double-figure lead the
rest of the way, posting their ninth home victory and second
straight win overall.
For Pace, Huggins led the way with her game-best 19 points,
while grabbing seven rebounds. Shields chipped in 13 points and
seven boards, while Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) totaled 12 points, eight rebounds, and six
assists. Laura Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St. John
Villa) grabbed a team-best nine rebounds, while dishing
out a game-high seven assists.
For Southern Connecticut, Jacqueline Johannes recorded a
double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Schicher scored
a team-best 17 points. Schicher added nine rebounds for the Owls.
Pace returns to action on Saturday, January 31, when the Setters
travel to Albany, NY to take on the Golden Knights of Saint Rose in
a Northeast-10 match-up. The New York State Thruway battle is set
for a 1:30 p.m. tip-off.
