PACE DEFEATS THE PURPLE KNIGHTS 70-59
PLEASANTVILLE, NY- Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island,
NY/St. John Villa) led a balanced Setter scoring attack,
totaling 12 of her team-high 16 points in the final period as Pace
won their third straight game and four of their last five as they
picked up the 70-59 win over the Purple Knights of Saint Michael's
College in Northeast-10 Conference action. The Setters improve to
9-15 overall and 8-11 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights drop
to 13-11 and 9-10 in conference play on the season. The Setters, in
conjunction with the Women's Basketball Coaches Association and
co-sponsored locally by Thornwood's Finnegan's Grill, raised $1,000
on the day towards breast cancer research.
The Setters found their shots early and often as they would
shoot a blistering 53.6% (15-for-28) in the opening period.
Kristin Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's)
hit a pair of triples on two of the Setters' first three
possessions to give Pace an early 8-2 advantage. The Setters would
break the game open over the final eight minutes of the opening
period, holding the Purple Knights to one field goal as Pace ripped
off an 18-6 run to close out the half and take a 40-26 into the
break.
Pace continued to build on their halftime lead, extending their
advantage to as much as 24 points that was capped by a Connolly
three-point play with 12:59 left in the game. Saint Michael's would
slowly chip away as the Setter lead and close the gap to nine
points with 49 seconds remaining the game. The Purple Knights would
not get any close as Christine Fitzgerald's (San Diego, CA/Mt. Miguel) (San Diego,
CA/Mt. Miguel) free throws down the stretch pushed the
lead back into double figures and the Setters would post their
third consecutive win.
For Pace, Klingele led the way with her 16 points on 7-for-13
shooting, while chipping in two boards, three assists and two
steals. Connolly shot 5-for-10 from the field and 3-for-6 from
downtown, finishing with 14 points, three caroms, two assists and
four steals. Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) tallied 13 points, four rebounds and three
steals, while Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St.
Peter's) had a solid all-around game with eight points,
nine boards, four assists and three steals.
For Saint Michael's, Michelle Otey (Southborough, MA/Algonquin
Regional) led the Purple Knights with a game-high 18 points, while
Logan Pintka (Niskayuna, NY/Colonie) totaled 13 points and a
team-best six boards.
Pace returns to action when they travel to Springfield, MA on
Tuesday, February 19 where they will face the Yellow Jackets of
American International College in a Northeast-10 Conference
match-up scheduled for a 5:30 pm tip-off. Saint Michael's will play
host to the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Tuesday at 5:30
pm.
