HUGGINS LEADS ALL SCORERS WITH 23 POINTS
NEW YORK, NY - Brittany Shields (Cold
Spring, NY/Haldane) scored all of her 17 points in the
second half to power the Setters to their third conference win of
the season as Pace downed the Dolphins of Le Moyne College 69-65.
The Setters improve to 3-2 overall and 3-2 in the NE-10, while the
Dolphins drop to 5-3 and 3-3 in conference play.
In a tight opening half, the Setters pulled ahead by five points
midway through the period at 19-14. Le Moyne would rally back to
take a one-point lead at 21-20 with 7:09 left in the half.
Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor) (Windsor, CT/Windsor) would pick
up the Setter offense, scoring on a lay-up and hit a pair of free
throws to put the Setters back in the lead at 23-20. The Dolphins
would control the rest of the half, closing out with a 9-2 run to
take a 29-25 lead into the break.
The game stayed close in the second half as the score was tied
11 times and there were nine lead changes over the final 20 minutes
of play. Shields came out strong to start the half, scoring on the
Setters' first two offensive possessions to draw Pace even at 29.
From that point to the final minute of play, the score flipped back
and forth between the two teams with neither team pulling away.
As time ticked away late, the Setters' Shiesha McCollum (Newburgh, NY/Washingtonville)
(Newburgh, NY/Washingtonville) put Pace up by one with a
pair of free throws with 3:01 left in the game. The teams would
trade baskets as Shields and Le Moyne's Vanessa Holden scored in
the paint. Huggins would push the Setters lead back to three with
1:09 remaining in the game. The Dolphins' Jacqueline Precious would
tie the game for ther14th and final time of the contest
with a trifecta with 54 seconds to go in the game. McCollum would
knock down a pair of free throws in the final minute, while Shields
would convert 3-of-4 from the charity stripe to lock up the victory
for the Setters.
For the Setters, Shields fell one rebound shy of a double-double
with her 17 points and nine rebounds on 5-for-6 shooting from the
field and was 7-for-10 from the free throw line. Huggins led all
scorers with 23 points, shooting 7-for-12 from the field and was
3-for-6 from downtown. McCollum finished with 11 points and six
rebounds.
For Le Moyne, Courtney Coryea led the Dolphins with 21 points,
while adding four rebounds and three assists. Holden grabbed a
team-high seven rebounds, while chipping in 12 points for the
Dolphins.
Pace returns to action when they host the Panthers of Adelphi
University on Monday, December 8 in non-conference action to take
place at the Goldstein Fitness Center on Pace's Pleasantville
campus.
