Box Score 2 BASEBALL DOWNS HAWKS WITH DOUBLE DIP
SWEEP
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace baseball team grounded the Hawks of
Saint Anselm in a twin bill, sweeping the doubleheader, 5-1, in the
opener and 3-2 in the nightcap. The Setters even their overall
record at 13-13 and 6-1 in the NE-10, while the Hawks fall to 4-12
overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/ Choate Rosemary Hall)
got the Setters rolling in the second inning of the opener, when he
drew a leadoff walk and then stole second. Mullen scored on a
single by Adam Harwood (Los Angeles, CA/Brentwood) (Los Angeles,
CA/Brentwood).
The Hawks scored their lone run in the fifth as Wayne McKay drew
a leadoff walk, moved to second on a ground out and scored on a
single by Mike Craig. The Setters responded in the half of the
inning as Chris Brown (West Kingston, RI/South
Kingston) lead off with a single. Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke)
(Westbury, NY/Clarke) reached first on a fielding error by
the pitching moving Brown to second. Both runners moved up a base
on a ground out and Brown later scored on a sacrifice fly by
Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep). Cawley would
drive in three more runs in the first game, blasting at two-run
homer in the seventh and hitting another sacrifice fly in the
eighth.
On the hill, senior hurler Angelo Fusaro (Stamford, CT/Westhill) (Stamford,
CT/Westhill) went the distance, tossing a four-hitter,
allowing one run, while fanning six to improve his record to 3-2.
For Saint Anselm, Mike Fantini (0-2) went seven innings, allowing
four run (two earned) and eight hits, while striking out six. Eric
Simm pitched the eighth inning, allowing one earned run and two
hits.
The Setters took the nightcap as well, as Matt Arburr (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern)
(Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) led off the second with a
single, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Arburr
scored on a sacrifice fly by Harwood. Brown kept the inning alive
with a two-out single, stole second and scored on a single by
Chris Spatkowski (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern).
The Hawks pushed across a run in the fifth but the Setters came
right back in their half of the inning as Spatkowski led off with a
bunt single. Barracato singled, moving Spatkowski to third.
Following a lineout double play to erase Barracato from the bases,
Cawley came through again with a run scoring single to score
Spatkowski. Saint Anselm added an unearned run in the ninth but the
Setters held on for the 3-2 win to complete the double-dip sweep.
For Pace, Justin Kanellis (Lansing, NY/Lansing Central) (Lansing, NY/Lansing
Central) tossed seven innings, allowing one run,
scattering four hits, while striking out four, to pick up his first
win of the season to improve his record to 1-3. Michael
Sheehy (Pelham, NY/Pelham Memorial) came on in relief for
the final two innings, allowing no hits and an unearned run in the
ninth, to pick up his first save of the season.
The Setters return to action when they host Northeast-10
Conference foe Southern New Hampshire University for a doubleheader
on Tuesday, April 3 at 1:00 pm at Finnerty Field on Pace's
Pleasantville campus.
