BASEBALL SHUTOUTS SOUTHERN CONNECTICUT, 3-0

NEW HAVEN, CT - Ted Mullen (Madison, CT/Chaote Rosemary Hall) (Madison, CT/ Choate Rosemary Hall) sparked the Setter offense in the sixth inning ripping an RBI single to drive in Jack Cawley (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) to lead Pace to its second consecutive conference victory with a 3-0 win over Southern Connecticut State.

Cawley drew a walk with one out in the top of the sixth and proceeded to steal second before crossing the plate on Mullen's base hit.

With Southern Connecticut unable to cross the platein the bottom half of the inning, Pace capitalized on a balk by Owls' pitcher Edward Bethke (Branford, Conn.), advancing Neil Ross (Cortland Manor, NY/Dominican College) to second, following his one out single. Ross would later move to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Joe Barracato (Westbury, NY/Clarke) (Westbury, NY/Clarke)

Southern Connecticut threatened in their half of the seventh as Sean Morgan (Maynard, Mass) had a two out double, moving Joe Kahldan (Norwalk, CT) to third, but Setter hurler Dustin Corbett (Vestal, NY/Vestal) preserved the shutout, forcing Karl Derbacher (North Branford) to fly out to end the inning.

Pace tacked on an unearned run in the ninth, allowing pinch runner Denis Alimonti (Jefferson Valley, NY/Lakeland) to score Pace's third and final run of the afternoon.

For Pace, Corbett (3-2) tossed 8 1/3 of shutout ball, scattering six hits, while striking out five. Eric Brown (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) (Norwalk, CT/Norwalk) came on in relief in the ninth, recording the final two outs of the game to earn his second save of the season.

Southern Connecticut drops to 4-16 overall and 0-2 in the NE-10 while Pace improves to 8-12 and 2-0 in conference play.

The Setters return to action when they host Concordia College on Friday, March 30 at 3:30 pm at Finnerty Field on Pace's Pleasantville campus.
