LEFORT'S BUCKET WITH 14 SECONDS LEFT LIFTS PENMEN TO WIN
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace women's basketball
dropped a heartbreaker to the Penmen of Southern New Hampshire
54-52 as Brooke LeFort's (Cumberland, RI/Cumberland) bucket with 14
seconds left in the game gave the Penmen a close victory. The
Setters drop to 1-4 overall and 1-3 in the Northeast-10, while the
Penmen improve to 2-3 and even their conference record at 2-2 on
the season.
Pace came out firing early, building their first half advantage
to as much as 13 with just over three minutes left in the half. The
Penmen cut the lead to nine as the Setters took a 34-25 lead into
halftime. The Setter shot 11-for-25 (44.0%) from the field, while
limiting the Penmen to 8-for-25 (25.0%) from the field.
Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St. John
Villa) led a balanced scoring attack for the Setters,
totaling nine points and three rebounds. Laura Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa)
(Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa), Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island,
NY/St. Peter's) and Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor) (Windsor,
CT/Windsor) each recorded four rebounds in the opening
period.
The second half was a different story for the Setters as the
shots fell off their mark with Pace shooting only 6-for-24 (25.0%),
while the Penmen would rally behind their 13-for-30 shooting
(43.3%). Taylor Losey's (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol, CT/Bristol
Eastern) three-pointer at the 13:15 mark of the final
period gave the Setters their biggest lead of the half at 41-32.
The Penmen would use a 9-0 run over the next three minutes, capped
off by a trifecta by Kristin Anderson (Hooksett, NH/Trinity) to tie
the game at 41. A pair of free throws by Klingele and a layup by
Mooney would put the Setter back ahead by four with just over seven
minutes to play. After a Penmen bucket,
Welsome nailed a three-pointer, giving the Setters 48-43 advantage
with 4:43 left in the game.
The Penmen would slice the lead to one on back-to-back baskets
by LeFort and Sara Tucker (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook Central) to cut
the Setter lead to one at 48-47. Following a Pace missed basket,
two Setters would go down to injuries on the ensuing Penmen fast
break as Tucker would give Southern New Hampshire their first lead
since the first minutes of the game as Tucker connected on a layup
and a 49-48 advantage. Kristin Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island,
NY/St. Peter's) would put the Setter back ahead by one but
missed the free throw on the attempted three-point play. LeFort
would convert a bucket plus free throw three-point play on the
ensuing Penmen possession to give them a two point lead late in the
game. Stephanie Rossmy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St. John
Villa) nailed a jumper to tie the game at 52 with just
over a minute remaining in the game. After a Penmen turnover, the
Setters would miss a pair of free throws setting up the
game-winning score for Southern New Hampshire. LeFort's jumper in
the paint gave the Penmen a two-point lead with 14 seconds to go in
the game. The Setters would fail to score on their next possession
but still had a chance with 2.9 seconds left following a missed
Penmen free throw. The Setters could not get a shot off in the
waning seconds and dropped a tough two-point loss.
For the Setters, Klingele led the way, posting 11 points, four
boards and three steals. Rossmy was the only other Setter in double
figure points, scoring 10, while grabbing five rebounds. Welsome
and Huggins each tallied six caroms, with Welsome chipping in eight
points. Mooney finished with a game-high five assists and four
steals.
For Southern New Hampshire, LeFort finished with a game-high 13
points, along with four boards and three steals. Ashara Carrington
chipped in 11 points and four rebounds, while Megan Shay led the
team with six rebounds.

in a Northeast-10 Conference game on Tuesday, December 4 for a 5:30
tip-off.
