66-52 IN CONFERENCE OPENER
SETTERS 13 THREE-POINTERS KEY UPSET VICTORY
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace women's basketball
team knocked off the Yellow Jackets of American International 66-52
in the Setters conference opener. The Setters improve to 1-1
overall and notch their first Northeast-10 win of the season to
move to 1-0, while American International drops to 1-1 and 0-1 in
conference play.
The Setters came out firing early as five of their first six
made field goals came from downtown, giving them a 20-13 lead
midway through the opening half. Pace would pull away using a 17-7
run over the final 7:26 as Taylor Losey (Bristol, CT/Bristol Eastern) (Bristol,
CT/Bristol Eastern) accounted for seven points in the run,
including a three-pointer. Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor) (Bristol,
CT/Bristol Eastern) also nailed a trifecta and added a
two-point basket. The run was capped by a fast break lay-up by
Christine Fitzgerald (San Diego, CA/Mt. Miguel) (San Diego, CA/Mt. Miguel) at
the buzzer, giving the Setters a 37-22 lead at the break.
Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St. John
Villa) led the Setters with nine points, including a pair
of three-pointers in the first half. As a team, Pace shot 8-for-15
from long range in the opening period, while the Setters held the
Yellow Jackets for 9-for-32 (28.1%) shooting for the half.
Pace continued their solid play into the second half as they
maintained a double-digit lead throughout the final period, as
American International got as close as 12 points with 4:28 left in
the game. Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St.
Peter's) nailed a jumper and classmate Kristin
Connolly (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) converted a
three-pointer pushing the lead back to 17 as the Setters would
cruise the rest of the way to take home the 66-52 conference
opening win.
For the Setters, Klingele led the way, posting 16 points and six
boards, while hitting on 5-of-10 from the field and 4-of-7 from
long range. Huggins came off the bench to collect 15 points and
three rebounds, while nailing 3-of-4 trifectas. Welsome totaled
eight points and four rebounds, while Connolly tallied eight points
and three boards. Stephanie Rossmy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, NY/St.
John Villa) chipped in six assists, while Laura
Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) dished out a
game-high seven assists.
For American International, Stacey Boisvert nearly missed a
double-double, finishing with 23 points and nine rebounds. Alexis
Castro was the only other Yellow Jacket in double figures in
scoring, finishing with 13 points and three boards. Jen Nnanna
posted nine rebounds along with her six points. As a team, American
International was limited to 21-for-62 shooting and was 3-for-22
from three-point range.
Pace returns to action when they travel to Colchester, VT to
take on Saint Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference game
on Sunday, November 25 for a 1:30 tip-off.
