Box Score PACE FALLS TO DOWLING IN SEASON
OPENER
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - The Pace women's basketball
team fell to the Golden Lions of Dowling College 74-59 in both
teams season openers. The Setters drop to 0-1, while Dowling
improves to 1-0 on the season.
Pace opened up the game hitting three of its first 17 shots but
only trailed by five points midway through the opening quarter.
Dowling would open up a 10-point lead with just under six minutes
to go in the first half before the Setters rallied. A pair of three
pointers by Staten Island's senior Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa)
(Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) and freshman
Lisa Welsome (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's) (Staten Island, NY/St. Peter's)
powered a 14-4 Setter run over the final 5:39 of the half to slice
the Pace deficit to one at the break. Welsome's fast-break bucket
put the Setters down by one at 32-31 at halftime.
The Setters' shots stayed true to start the second half, as the
Pace used a 20-9 run to open the final period to build a 51-41 lead
with 12:01 remaining in the game. Stephanie Rossmy (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten
Island, NY/St. John Villa) had six points from the post,
while Welsome and Klingele each nailed a trifecta. The run was
capped by a three-ball from freshman Brittany Huggins (Windsor, CT/Windsor)
(Windsor, CT/Windsor). The Setters shots went cold as they
hit on 3-of-17 the rest of the way as Dowling used a 33-8 run to
close out the game and escape Pleasantville with a win.
For the Setters, Klingele led the way, posting 20 points and
eight boards, while hitting on 6-of-10 from the field and 3-of-5
from long range. Huggins finished with 11 points, while Welsome
totaled 10 points and six rebounds. Rossmy grabbed six rebounds to
go along with her 10 points, while Laura Mooney (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten
Island, NY/St. John Villa) chipped in six boards and four
assists.
For Dowling, Molly Tubridy (Broad Chanel, NY/Loyola) recorded a
double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Nikkeia Daniels
(North Brentwood, MD/Potomac State) led the Golden Lions with 20
points and chipped in seven rebounds. Janika Sundstrom (Helsinki,
Finland/Makelanrine Sports) totaled 14 points and four rebounds,
while Michelle Yawn (Walker, LA/LSUE-Eunice) tallied 12 points,
eight boards and six assists.
Prior to the game, the Setters honor senior guard Stephanie
Klingele on surpassing 1,000th career point in as a
Setter. Klingele passed the 1,000 point mark in the 2007 NCAA
Northeast Regional Semifinal against Bentley on March 10, 2007.
Klingele currently has 1,025 points, good the 21st
all-time in Pace history.
Pace returns to action when they host American International
College in the Setters' Northeast-10 Conference opener on Tuesday,
November 20 for 5:30 p.m. tip-off at the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Dowling will host Dominican on Tuesday, November 20.
