Box Score SELMAN'S JUMPER STINGS SETTERS;
YELLOW JACKETS WIN, 61-60
PLEASANTVILLE, NY - Sharmion Selman's (Burlington,
VT) jumper from five-feet out with four seconds on the clock gave
American International what would be the winning basket in a 61-60
win over Pace University. Pace drops to 5-1 overall and 4-1
in the Northeast-10 while AIC remains undefeated at 6-0 overall and
4-0 in conference play.
AIC opened the game with a 9-2 run with Selman picking up four
points and Krystal Pressley (New Haven, CT) dropping in five.
Pace would battle back and continue to chip away at the Yellow
Jackets' lead before using an 11-3 run to take a 22-21 lead
with 3:37 remaining in the half. Pace would eventually push
their lead to five at the break. Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY/Oswego)
(Oswego, NY) paced the Setter offense with 11 points in
the first half. Her counterpart, Selman, was held to just
eight points and one rebound in the first half of play.
After Pace hit on just 1-of-10 from long range, the Setters came
out gunning in the second half, knocking down 5-of-11 from 3-point
territory. Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island,
NY) was 3-for-4 from the outside and scored the first five
points of the second half on her way to a 14 point game.
Hannah Sheppard (Norwich, Conn./Norwich Free Academy) (Norwich, CT) also had a
productive second half, chipping in seven points and four rebounds
down the stretch.
Down 58-48 with 5:16 on the clock, AIC went on an 11-2 run over
a four minute stretch to cut the Pace lead to 6-59. After a
steal by Yellow Jacket Tiffany Wooten (Mattapan, MA), Alissa Rubino
(Port Jefferson, NY) got the ball to AIC's
“go-to” player, and Selman knocked down the jumper from
just outside the paint. After a Pace inbounds, Jesse
Dlabola (Levittown, NY) slipped and lost the ball, only to
have teammate Maria Brown (Frederick, MD/Frederick/UMBC) (Frederick, MD) recover
the ball, weave through three American International defenders
before hoisting a desperation shot at the buzzer from half
court. Brown's attempt was high off the glass and the
Setters were dealt their first loss.
Selman proved to be too much for the Setters in the second half
as she burned Pace for 13 points and four rebounds while hitting on
7-of-9, including what would be the game-winner. Pressley was the
only other Yellow Jacket in double figures, scoring 17 on 7-of-12
shooting.
For Pace, Brown finished with four points and a game-high 11
rebounds while Dlabola had six points and seven assists.
Wallace would finish with 15 points and eight rebounds while
Sheppard tallied nine points and seven boards.
Pace returns to action on Saturday, December 10th
when they travel to Colchester, VT to take on the Purple Knights of
St. Michael's College in a Northeast-10 Conference match up
slated for a 1:30 p.m. start.
