Box Score PACE DEFEATS ADELPHI, 75-65
Garden City, N.Y. - The Panthers pulled within one, 32-31 at the half on a Betty Mendieta (North Bergen, NJ) lay-up and would take a brief three-point lead in the second half before falling 75-65 to Pace University in a non-conference match-up. With the loss Adelphi falls to 4-5 overall, while Pace improves to 6-2 on the season.
Pace jumped on the Panthers early, using a 14-2 run over the opening 5:40 to take a commanding 12-point lead. Adelphi chipped away at the Setter advantage, knotting the game at 23 with 6:10 to play in the first half on an Erin Thames (River Vale, NJ).
A lay-up by Ashley Wallace (Oswego, NY/Oswego) (Oswego, N.Y.) sparked a 9-4 Pace run that gave the Setter a 32-27 lead with just 50 seconds on the clock. However, Adelphi got a jumper from Carlyshia Hurdle (Brentwood, N.Y.) and a lay-up from Mendieta to enter the locker room down just one, 32-31.
The Panthers kept the pressure up in the second half, pulling ahead 40-37 on a Mary Lepore (Manhasset, N.Y.) lay-up with 17:07 to play. Pace responded with a 20-4 run over the next six minutes to take a commanding 57-44 lead. Adelphi cut the lead to eight on two occasions before falling 75-65.
Wallace led the Setters with 19 points, while teammates Jesse Dlabola (Levittown, NY/Holy Trinity/Adelpi Univ.) (Levittown, N.Y.) and Stephanie Klingele (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) (Staten Island, N.Y.) both chipped in 15 points.
Hurdle paced Adelphi with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Lepore and Gianna Smith (Hempstead, N.Y.) were also in double-figures with 19 and 10 points respectively.
The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, December 14 when they host NYIT at 5:30 pm in Woodruff Hall.
