PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Despite generating nearly 20 shots and controlling long stretches of play, Pace University men's soccer fell by a 3-0 final against Chestnut Hill College on Wednesday night at Northwell Stadium. With the loss, the Blue and Gold move to 2-1 in the young days of the season, as in-conference play still sits around the corner.
The Setters found themselves trailing early after the visitors struck in the ninth minute. Pace looked to answer quickly, nearly leveling the score when
Derrick Henry rattled the woodwork in the 22nd minute. Moments later, the Blue and Gold earned back-to-back corners as
Daniel Santos fired consecutive attempts that were blocked away.
Chestnut Hill doubled its lead in the 35th minute, but the Setters continued to press forward.
Tito Easter placed a shot on frame in the 36th minute that forced a save, while
Ervin Radoncic and Santos both tested the keeper with late first-half chances. Despite the push, the visitors capitalized again in the 43rd minute to carry a 3-0 advantage into the break.
Pace came out energized in the second half, creating a series of opportunities.
Nikita Dushkevich put two shots on target in the opening minutes, followed by a strong attempt from Radoncic that was denied at the 59th minute. The Setters continued their attack through the midfield, with Santos and Northeast 10 Rookie of the Week,
Thiago Lugo, each adding dangerous looks around the hour mark.
The momentum carried into the closing stretch as Pace earned four second-half corners.
Pietro Carvalho put a late attempt on goal in the 71st minute, while
Kai Maor and
Edward Vargas each added efforts that missed narrowly.
Radoncic paced the offense with a match-high six shots, including three on target while Santos recorded five shots and one on goal.
Goalkeepers
Joe Zweben and
Carson Durkin combined for seven saves on the night. Pace finished with a 19-15 edge in shots and earned eight corners compared to Chestnut Hill's three.
The Setters return to action on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. contest against Dominican University of New York at Northwell Stadium.
