WALTHAM, Mass. – In a miraculous, wild, come-from-behind victory, the No. 11 Pace men's lacrosse team gutted out an overtime win over No. 16 Bentley in Waltham, Mass, on Saturday afternoon, eliminating a three-goal differential with less than 50 seconds left in regulation.
Â
The back-and-forth contest saw four ties and four lead changes and was capped off by a graduate student
Kyle Casey's (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) overtime score to take the Setters to a 6-2 conference record, and 10-2 overall.
Â
Pace was down 13-9 late in the third quarter, but the will of the Pace players would not be denied as they outscored Bentley 7-2 the rest of the way.
Â
The Falcons seemed to have the game all sewn up with a 15-12 lead with less than a minute to play when the impossible happened.
Anthony Caputo (Westbury, N.Y./W.T Clarke) scored with 49 seconds to play,
Jake Veres (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) then scored 23 seconds later, and finally with just seven seconds remaining,
Tim Cairo (Shoreham, N.Y./Shoreham-Wading River) found Veres for the game-tying score.
Â
With two games remaining in the regular season, the Setters are now third in the conference standings, and in good shape to host an NE10 championship tournament first-round matchup.
Â
The triple threat of Casey, Veres and Cairo were once again unstoppable, each scoring three goals, to go along with a combined seven assists.
Â
However, the dynamic trio was actually a foursome against the Falcons, due to junior
Anthony Caputo's (Westbury, N.Y./W.T Clarke) career-best performance. The Westlake-native scored a career-high five goals to go along with two assists for another career-high of seven points.
Â
Goalkeeper
Louis Ragusa (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) also hit a career peak as the Yorktown Heights-native saved 20 shots for the first time and picked up his 10th win in net of the season.
