PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – With program history on the line, the Pace University men's basketball team earned a dramatic, overtime win at AIC on Saturday by a score of 82-81.
The victory clinches at least a share of the program's first-ever NE10 regular-season championship. Pace (17-8, 13-5 NE10) will also hold the top seed out of the Southwest Division during the upcoming NE10 Tournament.
The top-seeded Setters will enjoy a bye in the first round prior to hosting the NE10 Quarterfinals on Feb. 27.
In eerily similar circumstances to Pace's
win at Le Moyne earlier this season, it was
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) serving as the hero for the Blue and Gold.
With the game tied at 81-81, Gilbertson was fouled while attempting a half-court heave at the buzzer of overtime. The Pennsylvania native ended up making the necessary game-winning free throw with just 0.1 seconds on the clock.
The extra frame was created thanks to the Setters erasing a 13-point, second-half deficit. Pace rattled off a 20-6 run to take a one-point lead at the 4:07 mark.
The Setters and Yellow Jackets exchanged three leads in the final four minutes of regulation before a game-tying three-pointer from
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) with 22 seconds on the clock ultimately sent the game to extra time.
Speaking of Powell, he finished the contest with his ninth career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) led the Setters in scoring with 18 points, while
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) followed closely with 17 of his own. Powell chipped in six rebounds as well.
The Setters' balanced attack also featured nine-point efforts from both
Austin Gilbertson (Etters, Pa./Trinity) and
Marc Dadika (Saddle Brook, N.J./Saint Mary's Rutherford), while
Dominick Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic/Greens Farm Academy) added eight points off the bench.
Gilbertson's night included team-highs in both assists (4) and steals (2) as well.
Collectively, the Blue and Gold finished 30-of-67 (44.8%) from the field with almost half of those attempts coming from long range (10-for-30).
Up Next
The Setters will look to win the outright NE10 regular-season championship on Tuesday night (2/22) against Le Moyne. The 7:30 p.m. tip will also serve as Pace's Senior Night.
