PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – The Pace University men's basketball team clinched the outright NE10 Southwest Division regular-season championship on Tuesday night courtesy of a 73-64 win over Le Moyne College. The Setters will be the top seed in
the upcoming conference tournament after finishing their campaign with an NE10 record of 14-5 (18-8 overall).
Pace's postseason will begin on Sunday afternoon with a quarterfinal matchup against either fifth-seeded Le Moyne or fourth-seeded Stonehill inside the Goldstein Fitness Center.
Another balanced effort led the Blue and Gold to their seventh straight win on Tuesday. Pace put four in double figures, including three players finishing with at least 15 points.
Junior
Brandon Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Pine Bush) posted a team-high 16 points, while his twin brother
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) followed with a 15-point effort.
Bryan Powell (Middletown, N.Y./Canterbury School) also chipped in a team-best nine rebounds to narrowly miss out on his fifth double-double of the season.
Graduate forward
Dominick Cristiano (Valhalla, N.Y./Kennedy Catholic/Greens Farm Academy) matched Powell's 15 points, while being Pace's most efficient scorer (7-for-9 from the field).
Brandon Jacobs (Cambria Heights, N.Y./Long Island Lutheran) did not reach double figures in the game, but still posted one of his best stat lines of the season. The graduate guard finished with nine points, nine assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Jacobs, who played a game-high 39 minutes, is now tied for second in the NE10 in assists per game (5.7) this season.
Up by four at the break, the Setters opened the second half with an 18-1 run. After Le Moyne cut the lead to just two with 4:27 remaining, it was another 10-1 spurt that ultimately sealed the win for Pace.
Defense was once again a catalyst for the Blue and Gold as they limited Le Moyne to 21-of-55 shooting (38%) from the field. They also forced a season-high 22 turnovers.
