GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In a battle of top-10 nationally ranked teams, the Pace University men's lacrosse squad (No. 10) dropped an overtime thriller at seventh-ranked Adelphi on Wednesday by a score of 12-11.
Joseph Duchnowski netted the game-winner in extra time for the Panthers, finding the back of the net on the fourth possession of overtime.
The Setters battled back from a 4-1 first-quarter deficit, slowing gaining momentum and hanging tough throughout.
Pace stayed within one or two goals for the majority of the contest before finally finding the equalizer early in the fourth quarter. An
Alan Singleton (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Pierrefonds Comprehensive) goal off an assist from freshman
Rafael Rodriguez, Jr. (Farmingville, N.Y./Sachem East) knotted the score up at 8-8 with a little over 10 minutes left in regulation.
17 seconds later, graduate student
Daniel Lewis (Bohemia, N.Y./Connetquot) would provide the Setters with their first lead courtesy of his third-career goal. Senior
Joseph Diggle (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) earned the assist on the play.
The Setters and Panthers would go back and from there with ties at 9-9, 10-10 and eventually 11-11 on an Adelphi tally with 1:23 on the clock. Â
Pace's 11 goals in the contest came via nine different players.
Walker Azzaro (Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla./Ponte Vedra) and
Blake Balcaen (Webster, N.Y./Webster Schroeder) served as the Setters' only multiple goal-scorers while
Jake Veres (Robbinsville, N.J./Robbinsville) led the squad with four total points (G, 3A).
Graduate student
Bryce Clark (Rumson, N.J./Rums Fair-Haven Regional) once again took the leading role on face-offs, finishing 14-of-27 with four ground balls.
Junior goalkeeper
Louis Ragusa (Yorktown Heights, N.Y./Yorktown) posted a crucial 15 stops in net, securing his second double-digit save effort of the year.
