Men’s Lacrosse Punches Ticket to Postseason; Hold Off Bentley in Thriller

BRIARCLIFF, NY- Matthew Cossidente netted four goals as the Setters punched their ticket to the postseason with an 8-6 win over the Bentley Falcons. Pace locks up the #6 and final seed in the Northeast-10 Championship and will head to #3 Adelphi University on Tuesday in the Quarterfinals. The Setters finish the regular season at 8-6 and 6-5 in the NE-10, while the Falcons end their season at 6-7 and 5-6 in conference play.

Defense and excellent goaltending was the story of the first half as the teams combined for three first half goals. Tyler Meigel got the Setters on the board with the only first quarter goal at the 7:29 mark. Pace remained ahead until Bentley tied the score at the 3:36 mark of the second quarter. The Setters headed into halftime with a one goal lead as Peter Sharp scored at the 1:48 mark off a Wyatt Barfoot assist.

In the second half, the Setters pulled ahead to a four goal lead with three unanswered goals early in the third quarter. Barfoot netted a pair, while Cossidente scored his first of the afternoon to put the Setters back ahead at 5-1 with 7:49 left in the quarter. The Falcons rallied with four straight goals with the final coming with 20 seconds on the clock in the third quarter to even the score at 5-5 heading to the final 15 minutes of play.

Cossidente provided all the scoring for the Setters in the final quarter as he scored a pair early in the fourth at the 12:28 and 9:29 mark to put Pace back ahead 7-5. The Falcons closed the gap with a goal at the 3:52 mark but Cossidente provided an insurance goal with 1:36 left in the game to seal the deal for the Setters and send them back to the NE-10 Championship for the first time since 2010.

Pace goalie Michael Bonitatibus recorded 11 saves in 60 minutes of action between the pipes. Cossidente shined in the win with four goals, while Barfoot totaled two goals and two assists.
