PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Freshman
Liam Brennan netted four points behind two goals and two assist to help Pace upend the St. Anselm Hawks 14-11. Following the victory, Pace advances to 3-2, 1-1 NE-10 while St. Anselm falls to 0-4, 0-2 NE-10.
The Setters didn't waste any time as
Matt Ruquet won the opening faceoff and advanced up the field before beating the keeper to put Pace up 1-0. The opening score was the first of a trio of unanswered goals as freshmen
Joshua Kreitler and
Wyatt Barfoot each found twine to help the Setters claim a 3-0 advantage early in the first. After the Hawks got on the board for the first time of the day, Pace closed out the quarter with a pair of scores as Brennan scored his first before
Anthony Gadaleta recorded his first tally of the day.
Brennan stayed hot as he scored the opening goal of the second quarter on an assist by Gadaleta with 14:17 on the clock to give the Setters a 6-1 lead. The Hawks rallied behind four straight goals to cut the deficit to just one, but Kreitler answered for Pace as he found the back of the net on an assist by Gadaleta with 8:07 to play in the half. The run-stopping goal was the first of a trio of consecutive scores for Pace as
Peter Sharp and
Tyler Meigel both scored with
Dan Hanson and
Ryan O'Hagan picking up assists. After the Hawks added a late score, the Setters entered the locker room with a 9-6 lead.
St. Anselm opened the second half with three consecutive goals to knot things even at nine before Gadaleta scored a go ahead goal on an assist by Kreitler. With 1:36 to play in the quarter, junior captain
Matthew Cossidente stretched the advantage to a pair as he beat the keeper on an assist by Brennan.
The Hawks netted the first score of the final quarter to cut the Setter advantage to just one until Sharp responded with a goal to give Pace a 12-10 lead with 11:24 remaining in the contest. St. Anselm scored once more before the games conclusion, but late goals by Barfoot and Cossidente helped the Setters claim a 14-11 victory.
Brennan and Gadaleta each recorded two goals and two assists with Brennan scooping up a pair of groundballs. Cossidente and Kreitler each scored two goals with an assist. Sharp added three groundballs to a pair of goals and an assist while Barfoot was the final Setter to net a pair of goals. In addition to his goal, Ruquet was 18-24 on the draw and scooped up five groundballs. LSM
Brandon Donnellan also grabbed five groundballs while causing a turnover.
Between the pipes,
Michael Bonitatibus earned the win after playing all 60 minutes while recording 11 saves and allowing 11 goals.
The Setters return to action on Tuesday, March 24
th when they travel to Garden City, N.Y. to take on the Adelphi Panthers at 4:00 p.m.
