Softball Opens 2015 Season With Pair of Wins

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CLERMONT, FL- The Setters kicked off their 2015 season with a pair of wins over Merrimack and Lock Haven. Pace rallied in the opener to down Merrimack 5-3 and won a pitcher's duel against Lock Haven 3-0. Pace opens their season at 2-0.

In the opener, Merrimack got on the board in the opening inning as they plated three runs to take an early advantage. The Setters chipped away in the fourth inning as Larissa Labs led off with a single. After moving to second on a sacrifice, Natalie Gellos got the Setters on the board with an RBI triple. Surina Sandhu drove in Pace's second run of the day with a groundout.

In the fourth, the Setters got a pair of runners on base and tied the game as Jeane Drury ripped a single to right field to even the score at 3-3. Following an intentional walk to load the bases, Sandhu put the Setters ahead for good with a two-run single to right.

On the mound, Caitlin McCann tossed four innings, allowing three runs on six hits and fanning three. Jaclyn Flores came on relief, pitching three scoreless and hitless innings to earn her first collegiate win. She struck out three, including fanning the first batter she faced on the college level.

In the nightcap, Kaitlynn Nelson was locked in a pitcher's duel with Lock Haven's starter as both went the distance. Nelson (1-0) picked up her first win of the season, as she tossed a four-hitter, striking out six.

The Setters got on the board in the third as Shelby Yung singled and stole second. Drury put the Setters up with a single to left field to score Yung. Pace added some insurance runs in the seventh as Nikole Larm singled to right-center. Freshman Tara Bernstein made her first collegiate hit a clutch one as she blasted a two-run homerun for a 3-0 Setters advantage.

The Setters continue their Florida road trip as they take on the University of Bridgeport at 1 pm and Saint Michael's College at 3 pm.
