Meigel Tallies Three Goals as Men’s Lacrosse Downs Post

WATERBURY, CT – Freshman Tyler Meigel led the way with three goals as the Setters held off a last Post rally to earn an 11-9 win. The Setters even their record at 1-1, while the Eagles fall to 0-2 on the season.

Post got on the board early with a pair of goals but the Setters answered with the next four. Meigel got the scoring going for the Setters with a man-up tally at the 5:51 mark, while Liam Brennan added a goal late in the opening quarter to even the score at 2-2. Trevor Chernoff and Anthony Gadaleta each scored early in the second quarter to put the Setters up 4-2. The Eagles scored twice in the final seven minutes as the teams went into halftime tied at 4-4.

Wyatt Barfoot tallied an early second half goal but the Eagles tied the game at 5-5 2 minutes later. The Setters found success on the power play as Matthew Cossidente and Meigel both scored man-up goals, while Gadaleta added an even-strength goal to push Pace in the lead at 8-5.

Post rallied with three of the next four goals as Joshua Kreitler scored on the power play at the 13:20 of the fourth quarter as the Eagles closed the gap to 9-8 with 5:42 left in the game. Peter Sharp and Meigel added late goals to end the Post rally and lift the Setters to their first win of the season.

The Setters dominated in shots 41-24, while going 4-for-7 on the extra-man opportunities. Meigel led the way with three goals, while Brennan tallied one goal and three assists. Gadaleta added two goals and one assist, while Krietler totaled two points. Matt Ruquet won 16-of-23 faceoffs and led the team with nine groundballs, while Brandon Donnellan scooped up five groundballs. Senior Michael Bonitatibus played the enter game in net for the Setters and recorded 11 saves.

The Setters return to action on Saturday, February 28 as they travel to #10 Dowling College for a non-conference game at 4 pm.
