Lacrosse Drops Heartbreaker to Mercy in Home Finale

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y.- Matt Mirabito (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC) (Binghamton, NY/Broome CC) finished with five points as the Setters dropped a heartbreaker 8-7 loss to the Mavericks of Mercy College in non-conference action. The Setters fall to 5-9 on the season, while Mercy improves to 6-5 overall.

The Setters struck first as Mirabito netted an early goal in the first two minutes of play. The Mavericks answered with four unanswered goals in the opening quarter to take a 4-1 leads after one quarter of play. Pace built some momentum in the second quarter as William Scioscia (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) (Somerset, NJ/Immaculata) scored a goal and assisted on a Mirabito goal to pull Pace to within a goal at 4-3. The Mavericks went back up two goals with just over two minutes to play but the Setters answered in the final seconds. Peter Nieporent (Wilton, CT/Norwalk) (Wilton, CT/Norwalk) assisted Mirabito on a fast-break goal with 14 seconds left in the half as Pace trailed 5-4 at the break.

The Setters powered into the lead early in the second half with a pair of early goals. Scioscia netted his second goal of the day less than two minutes into the third quarter to tie the game at five.  Matt Gebhardt (West Islip, NY/West Islip) (West Islip, NY/West Islip) gave the Setters a 6-5 lead two minutes later off a Mirabito assist. Mercy pulled event at six later in third quarter as the teams headed to the final quarter knotted at six.

Gebhardt got his second scored of the day in the first minute of the fourth quarter. The Mavericks answered with five and a half minutes to play as they tied the score at seven. Mercy would take as lead as they scored six seconds later off the ensuing faceoff to take an 8-7 lead.

For Pace, Mirabito's five points (three goals, two assists) led the Setters, while Scoiscia netted a pair of goals and added one assist. Gebhardt finished with two goals, while John Kolesar (Warwick, NY/Warwick) (Warwick, NY/Warwick) recorded two assists. In net, Kevin Grady (Medford, NY/Bellport) recorded 18 saves in 60 minutes of action in goal for the Setters.

Pace returns to action on Saturday, April 28 when the Setters will travel to Rindge, NH for a Northeast-10 Conference game against Franklin Pierce University at 1 pm for their final game of the season.
