Box Score 2 BRIARCLIFF, N.Y.- Lana Buchbinder (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) (San Francisco, CA/George Washington) blasted a walk-off two-run homerun in the bottom of the eighth as the Setters earned a split of a doubleheader with the Yellow Jackets of American International. American International took the opener 13-5, while the Setters won game two 12-10. The Setters move to 17-20 overall and 9-12 in the NE-10, while the Yellow Jackets fall to 15-19 and 11-9 in conference play.
American International scored in the first four innings of play, including pushing across seven in the fourth to take a 13-0 lead. The Setters rallied in the fifth as they scored five in the inning as Nicole Schultheis (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) (Plainview, NY/Bethpage) had an RBI single. Sabrina Gonzalez (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) (Oxnard, CA/Ventura College) also singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. Nicole Pellegrino (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) (Smithtown, NY/Smithtown West) had a two-run single but Pace came up short and fell 13-5.
For Pace, Gonzalez and Schultheis both went 2-for-3 for the Setters. On the mound, Kelly Fisher (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) (Castle Rock, CO/Douglas County) tossed two innings, allowing four runs on five hits to take the loss. Christina Rescigno (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel Academy) (Elmsford, NY/Good Counsel) went the final three innings, allowing nine runs (seven earned) on 11 hits.
In the nightcap, American International took a got a run in the third but the Setters rallied in the bottom of the inning as Lauren Bell (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free Academy) (New Windsor, NY/Newburgh Free) had a two-run single, while Chelsea Shea (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) (Babylon, NY/West Babylon) also drove in a run as Pace led 3-1. The Yellow Jackets tied the score at three on a Brittany Breault two-run homerun in the fourth. Pace again answered in the bottom of the frame as Bell and Samantha Garcia (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) (Rancho Cucamonga, CA/Rancho Cucamonga) both had RBI singles.
Pace pulled ahead in the fifth as they scored five runs in the inning for a 10-3 lead. Schultheis had a RBI double, while Rachael McMahon (Corona, CA/Esperanza) (Corona, CA/Esperanza) had a two-run single. Bell drove in a run with single, while Sarah Meleney (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) (Rockville, MD/Richard Montgomery) singled in the final run of the inning. American International battled back with four runs in the sixth and tied the score at 10 with three runs in the seventh to force extra innings.
In the eighth, Michelle Ngwafon (Rockville, MD/Rockville) (Rockville, MD/Rockville) doubled with one out and that set up Buchbinder to give the Setters the win with a two-run walk-off blast.
For Pace, Bell went a perfect 5-for-5 in the nightcap with four RBIs, while Buchbinder went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and three runs scored. McMahon went 2-for-4 with three runs scored. On the mound, Shea started, going 5 2/3 innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on nine hits, while striking out five. Colby Hochmuth (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) (Delanson, NY/Duanesburg) went one inning, allowing two runs, while Fisher (3-5) earned the win in relief, pitching 1 1/3 innings, allowing one run on one hit.
The Setters return to action on Friday, April 22 when Pace will travel to Waltham, MA for a Northeast-10 doubleheader against Bentley University at 3 pm.
